Elephone today tweeted that their budget Ivory phone will ship with Android 5.1 but get an update to Android 6 earlier next year.
Android 6 is making its way on to plenty of Chinese smartphones from the high end OnePlus 2 to the $99 Elephone Ivory. Elephone announced that they were working on a new smartphone that would retail at under $100 a few weeks back and have now confirmed it will come with Android 5.1 out of the box.
Elephone haven’t confirmed when the Elephone Ivory all go on sale, but those of you choosing to buy it can mark March in your diary as the date you should receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
While this still sounds like a while away, it actually doesn’t give Elephone all that long to get the latest Android version running on their phones. For the next few weeks factories are working on Christmas orders, then there is the rush for Chinese New Year, and then China basically shuts down for 2 weeks in February for the Spring Festival celebrations. March seems like an optimistic timeframe to us.

Elephone Ivory Specifications
From what we have learnt about the Elephone Ivory, it will be a 5—inch HD phone with 2.5D on-cell display. The phone runs on an octacore Mediatek MT6753 chipset with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. Other details include a 13 mega-pixel rear camera, 2 mega-pixel front and 2100mAh battery.
At $99.99, the Elephone Ivory will have strong competition from the UMi Rome, Blackview BV2000 and other sun $100 phones.
Most important than when they’ll get Marchmellow, is when will they get Sun light…
This is a step in the right direction for this company, but they have a history of announcing things and never releasing them or significantly delaying them (How’s that Vowney coming along Elephone?). Knowing Elephone you won’t see Marshmallow till this time next year.
If ever… Which puzzles me as they were able to put out a nice phone on time in that other phone Andy liked so much….
They should put their act togheter so that MAYBE greatness might one day visit them… At least for a one-hit-wonder….
The problem with Elephone is they try to do to much at once. If they focused on just releasing one or two phones a year, they could be excellent devices. Instead they release a new “flagship” every 2 months and expand into other areas like action cams. They don’t realize they are not Xiaomi or Meizu, they don’t have the brand name or the quality to release so many phones at once.
Yep they are definitely dividing their community each phone they release.
even those companies try to limit their device count to a tolerable threshold…
i mean come on … if i ask you to give THREE exams in one day… good chance you’ll collapse … thats what elephone are doing , except for the collapse part , which they have avoided as of yet but it remains a possibility as long as they remain stubborn instead of embracing humility and intuition of the smartphone market and its dynamics.
Nice looking phone for $100 and considering Elephone’s past designs. It’s show casing Elephone’s investment into moulding better frames/shells.
