Cowhide has never been a feature that I have ever looked for in a phone, but Uhans are using that feature (along with a Vertu style design) as reasons to buy their U100 smartphone, so what is it like once in the hand?
The rear of the Uhans U100 box says “Reaching the world at your fingertips”, well the first thing your fingertips will feel when holding the U100 is the leather rear panel and angular body.
Uhans U100 hands on
Uhans are adamant that the rear panel on the U100 is genuine cowhide and even sent us over a bunch of photos aiming to show its real leather, but as I have the phone in my hand I’ll just post real photos of the phone I have.
Even with the phone in my hand I am not certain that the rear is really leather. There is no leather smell to it, but it is definitely a material with a soft leather feel and finish that’s certainly different from the norm.
On the rear there is also a silver “Uhans” logo area where a red detail is painted. The silver area feels quite thin but appears to be covered in metal. The single LED flash and rear camera poke through here too, and looking at the lens of the camera I can see there is some alignment problem with my review sample.
Gizchina News of the week
Either side of the Uhans U100 has a sliver border. This appears to be a thin metal unit that is held in place by 3 screws on either side. The right of the phone has a power button while volume rockers live on the left. These buttons do wobble and rattle a little.
The front of the device has an angular design that sort of reminds me of a concept car design. There are also a couple of front facing speakers on the device just below the capacitive navigation buttons.
Further up the front of the phone is the 4.7-inch HD display and above that is a 5 mega-pixel front camera.

Specs for the phone include a Mediatek MT6735P chipset, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory, so basic specs but this is a fashion phone not a top of the range gaming and photography machine.
The Uhans U100 is a phone that appeals to a certain niche, and unfortunately I don’t fall in to the companies demographic. The leather finish is a desired taste as is the angular design, but if you are looking for a Vertu style phone at a fraction of a fraction of the cost then why not take a look. Full Uhans U100 review coming soon.
Wow is that even uglier than I thought, I kinda wanna go throw up now after looking at it in something other than promo shots. And it looks like plastic with a “leather texture” added.
