Elephone’s 4K action camera, the Elephone Explorer is in the house and like other Chinese action cameras it comes with decent specs, a ton of accessories and at a low price.
Elephone have diversified their range so that it now includes an E-cig and now an action camera. The Elephone Explorer is the name of the low-cost sports camera, and like other Chinese cameras (Xiao Yi, SJCAM) it costs just a fraction of the price of a GoPro and ships with a ton of accessories.
Elephone Explorer Action Camera
Like SJCAM and Xiao Yi, Elephone have gone for a GoPro design and include a waterproof case with the action camera, but unlike a GoPro there are additional buttons on the body and a rear screen.
Those extra buttons are for switching the WIFI on and navigating through the onscreen options on the 2-inch display. Elephone have had a hand in the UI design and the system looks nicer and more polished than some other companies offerings.
Gizchina News of the week
From the settings you have options to switch between modes (stills of video) and then you also have the resolution options. Elephone are using the fact that the Explorer can shoot at 4K as a major selling point but it will only do that a 15FPS, you can also shoot at 2.7K at 30FPS but I think most people will for 1080p at 60FPS.
There is no image stabilisation on the Elephone Explorer, but as I haven’t had the chance to use the camera on the trail yet I don’t know how the lack of gyro affects the video quality (hopefully tomorrow we’ll know more when I’ve been out with it).
As for the hardware well the Explorer has a 16 mega-pixel OV sensor, 170 degree lens, 900mAh battery, WIFI, micro SD support for 64GB memory cards and even a micro HDMI out.
Check back tomorrow to see how well the camera performs in my usual mountain bike trail test!
