The rumour that Xiaomi are working on a laptop have been floating around for almost a year now, now new details have emerged detailing what the price and specifications for the device might be.
New details emerged today claiming to tell everything we want to know about the rumoured Xiaomi laptop. Apparently the device will go on sale as an affordable alternative to the new Apple Macbook with all metal body, but with a choice of screen sizes. One option will be a sub 12.5-inch model while the other a larger 15.6-inch device.
Gizchina News of the week
Under the hood of the laptop insiders say we will find a Intel i7 4th generation processor, 8GB RAM and Nvidia GeForce GTX 760M GPU. The screen will feature LED backlit technology with a modest resolution of 1920 x 1080.
As for the operating system, well today’s rumours say Linux will be used, but with Xiaomi’s own UI. Think of it as a Chinese version of Chrome OS made by Xiaomi with a lot of cloud apps. However, we won’t be surprised if the laptop is also ready to run Windows 10 too like the recently released Xiaomi Mi Pad 2.
Pricing for the Xiaomi laptop is said to be just 2999 Yuan, making it a very affordable laptop, especially if it does feature an alloy body.
lol if they really put a light-up “mi” logo on the lid.
haha .. i’d actually LIKE that :D!
If you could change the colors it would be pretty cool. But it would probably get annoying after a while.
That pricing is probably for the 12 inch model right?
OR a killa PRice for the 15.6 Inch model !
if this can run win 10 64 bit then IM SOLD !
cos with the specs listed above, mid-high settings gaming is easily achievable on ALL the latest and UPCOMING PC titles !
WELL DONE XIAOMI ! i hope more chinese OEMs follow in ur footsteps with MOAR impressive yet considerably CHEAPER options in this catalogue !
with this innovation , im INTERNALLY screaming for Xiaomi to OFFICIALLY enter our LOCAL market … PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEEEE !
This doesn’t seem like it is internally :p
haaha , valid point 😀
The minimum requirements for Win 10 is a 1ghz processor, 2GB RAM and Direct X9. Just about every Intel SoC released since 2007 is 64 bit.
but .. but , WHAT ABOUT PC GAMES ?!
we need a really capable processor (read i5 or higher) for ATLEAST mid settings with 40+ stable fps gaming …
and i bet not EVERY intel SoC , esp those from 07 , are capable of pulling that off for the upcoming titles !
>4th generation processor
Meh…
Surely the difference between the 4th and current ones are quite negligible ?
exactly … but not everyone’s got a brain , nowadays :p
Better graphics, lower TDP and overall temperature, longer battery life.
Those are important features for laptop’s CPU.
A slot loading bay would make me want this even more than I do. And if the MI logo lights!!!!!!??????? I am flying to China!
Can the specs run fallout4?
Yes, if it does actually turn out to be those specs… You wouldn’t get it on Ultra settings with a 760M but you’d be able to play it at medium/high with decent fps…
and that ALONE is v.decent for the price .. eh , @api182:disqus ?
You’re dead right Muhammad! I’d have it @ that price and specs (providing the Keyboard was available in English…)
I have bought a few laptops in Asia. Three in Thailand (where my residence is 6 months out of the year), one in South Korea and two in China. All of them had a QWERTY keyboard that features both English and the native characters. You can see the example below, I have actually never seen one in my travels that was just the native language (not saying they don’t exist just never noticed one). Below is what a Thai keyboard typically looks like:
You will not be able to play it on medium/high, rather low/medium.
I have a desktop with a 750ti which is a faster graphics card and an 6th gen i5 6600k processor which is waay faster and it runs it on medium at ~50fps which is an decent framerate. You will most likely be able to run it on low with good framerates, but I don’t think that it will have much more than 30fps on medium.
However, if you look at graphics comparisons on YouTube between low and medium you will see that they’re very similar visually, so I’d personally still be very content with playing FO4 on low.
I have played it on Ultra Settings on a friends PC with a Titan and a 4K display and I play it personally on an Xbox One. It looks better on the PC especially the draw distance but not better enough to justify his graphics card costing more than my console and TV lol.
making laptops is useless
super expensive Intel and Nvidia definitely will make this laptop too expensive
thus, I hope it is fake
please don’t be such a negative nancy :/
If we go by the specs above those are all older components which would keep the cost of this to below $1000. Why would you hope it’s fake? Even if you can’t afford this particular one, if it is successful they will expand into make laptops for every budget. This could be the predecessor to a Redmi Laptop that costs the same as most phones.
It’ll be one of those Xiaomi products that comes out with no support for the English language, except this time it’ll be really relevant as the keyboard will be in Chinese and a physical keyboard (if present) needs to be in your language doesn’t it…
i pray that they take us english speakers into account :p
Chinese keyboard is international QWERTY.
If there’s a 760M in a sub 12.5″ laptop it’s just begging for the battery to be killed within 2hrs. The 760M is hopefully just for the 15″ model. Let’s hope that it’s a real GNU/Linux laptop rather than a ChromeOS-like distro, otherwise i’ll just install another linux distro on it myself.
I hope it’s a Windows 10 laptop, it’d be wasted on Linux… (Let’s start that argument that’s everywhere on the net already!!!! (Windows vs Linux) – Joking, I can’t be arsed to do all that Windows is better stuff over and over, all I will say is that this spec would be good for gaming, and you can’t deny that Windows is where it’s @ for that ;-))
I’m a Linux guy myself, every computer i have in my house runs linux. My laptop, my desktop, my phone, my router, everything. I could have the Windows VS Linux argument for hours (and I have done that before), but let’s screw that and agree on one thing: If they use a ChromeOS-like distro and don’t make it possible to install a third party OS on it like Windows or some other Linux distro they are making a huge mistake.
You can install normal distros on a Chromebook. I have three Chromebooks, one runs Fedora, one has Ubuntu and the third runs normal ChromeOS.
I have one chromebook too as my main laptop running Arch, works wonders and the battery life is great. There’s even an open source bootloader script that makes my computer (Acer c720) boot faster to GNU/Linux than it does to Chrome OS (ChromeOS takes 8 secs, Arch takes 5).
Need a upgrade though because i can’t stand that it only has 2gb of ram.
Yea the 2GB of RAM is the killer on most Chromebooks. But they do make excellent cheap Linux books with incredibly battery life.
I agree.
I am praying that it is Linux, there aren’t enough good dedicated Linux laptops released, other than Chromebooks and the smaller specialty companies (System76, ZaReason, thinkpenguin etc).
I actually love Windows 10, the first Windows I have enjoyed since XP but when I buy this it will either run whatever Xiaomi uses or Ubuntu.
the linux os xiaomi , will be more like ubuntu débian distribution , with real desktop app like chrome , skype , vlc , ect …..
the specs and price in this article , is for the 15″ , but what is the specs and price for the 12″ ?
I think it’s going to be more Chromimum with a MIUI look it it.
Lol , a I7 and a gtx nvidia for just webapp !!
stop saying absurdity you wrong .
Kind of like an i5 with 8GB RAM would be absurd on Chrome? You must have never seen or heard of the pixel. And you can do a lot more on a Chromebook than just use webapps.
alot more …lol i very much doubt that…there’s isnt so much that the web apps have to offer…
please put in an nvidia 960m with skylake..
that’ll skyrocket the costs like crazy…
honestly there’s NOT much difference at all in 3rd gen to 6th gen CPU …
either will do if ur a power user and play games !
According to gsmarena its slated for next year April…
and the others arent ?!
do answer my question but also let me just put down the point that xiaomi is looking at developING markets , where ppp (purchasing power parity) is a big issue. Dell is a giant of world computing and can profit from 1st world and 3rd world countries all the same (tho ironically , xiaomi may have something to say about their 3rd world share in the near future 😛 )
but xiaomi is target cost-effective solutions and i think atm , skylake being intel’s Newest lapdog , ought to cost more than its older brothers and that pushes the budget-friendly part out of the equation.
pretty sure same goes for the 960m but i bet a 2gb 960m could find a place in xiaomi’s budget friendly builds !
The difference in price is $300. Are you insane or just really stupid? i7>i5, GTX 960 ≈ GTX 760.
Resellers have already listed the laptop for prices as high as $700+. Check Banggood. You are the one stupid if you think Xiaomi will sell this laptop for the same price or less than their premium smartphones.
The 960m ≈ 860m >> 760m ; there’s at least a 15-20% improvement in raw performance.
In terms of laptop CPUs, there is ALOT different.
The last few generations havn’t added that much extra horse power I agree with you there, but the TDP is way lower and going from a 3rd gen to a 6th gen can easily give you the same performance using half the amount of power.
According to gsmarena its slated for next year April..
Banggood have already listed it…for $710
http://www.banggood.com/Xiaomi-Laptop-Intel-Core-i7-8G-DDR3-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-760M-15_6-Inch-p-941729.html
Resellers will often list products that haven’t been launched yet, the price almost never stays the same as what they have listed. Having said that I think we could see this laptop listed for under $750.
lol if they really put a light-up “mi” logo on the lid.

The specs sound very odd. Xiaomi pride themselves in using latest components, it would be very odd for them to use Intel 4th Gen cpu for next year while 6th gen is already popular and Nvidia should have announced next gen gpu at that time as well. These specs really need a ton of salt!
It depends on the market this is meant for. Xiaomi prides themselves on affordability as well as specs. Right now the economies in the countries Xiaomi mostly sell in, are horrible. A $700 laptop with last gen specs will net them a lot more sales and reach a much wider audience than a $2000 laptop with current gen specs. Especially since this is their very first laptop. The 15.6 inch model will probably be the “Pro” version with all the latest specs.
who pays more than 800$ for a laptop??..not the average buyer..laptop prices in India hover around above mark or less…and no need to splurge money on laptop, baring aside people who buy the mac and other supposedly high end models…way to go Xiaomi!
Millions of people spend more than $800 on a laptop, including people in India.

Because there’s basically no difference.

They should use AMD or ARM chips instead of intel to lower the price, and it is good they are using Linux instead of Windows.

There’s a difference between the GTX 960 and the GTX 960m or the GTX 760 and the GTX 760m. Learn it!
voltage, size, cooling
if not respect alteast have some deceny man…. i was talking of laptop graphics chipset … and u r comapring with desktop graphics card.. 😀 neverthless thanks for the info
