Hands on video with the white version of the Xioami Mi5 live from the media preview event in Barcelona.
To follow on with our Xiaomi Mi5 launch coverage today here is a hands on video of the white version of the phone from the media preview event in Barcelona.
The phone in the video is the Xiaomi Mi5 (I couldn’t find the Mi5 Pro), so it has 3GB RAM instead of 4GB RAM. The rest of the specifications are the same including the Snapdragon 820 chipset, 3000mAh battery, and 16 mega-pixel rear camera with 4 axis OIS.
Gizchina News of the week
The Xioami Mi5 will go on sale in China on the 1st January starting at 1999 Yuan for the 3GB RAM version with 3D glass rear panel. 2499 Yuan will get the 64GB RAM version and 2699 Yuan is the cost of the Xiaomi Mi5 Pro with 4GB RAM, 128GB internal memory and ceramic rear.

I agree the looks are rather boring but…
“ordinary specs”. The SnapDragon 820 and Sony IMX 298 with OIS are suddenly “ordinary”? I get you don’t like Xiaomi they are not for everyone but “ordinary” makes you sound like a troll.
he or she is definitely a troll, 129g 3k battery, 4axis ois,snap 820 imx 298 not ordinary
Actually in high end, even 1440p and 4GB of RAM are ordinary so one could say it’s bellow ordinary.
Actually in high end even 700$ or more is ordinary so one could say this 300$ phone is extraordinary
Nope now I want to wait for the Meizu MX6 to come out. I wasn’t wowed by the Mi5 like I was with the S8, but the conundrum I have is MIUI vs Amgio. I love MIUI, I have mixed feelings about Amigo.
did you ever stumble across ZUK at the show? I know they didn’t have a booth, but I thought there would be some news on the Z2.
Nope, never saw them. But I had limited time on the show floor and spent most of my time focusing on three things: Gionee S8, Windows Phones and Samsung S7.
the s8 really wowed you? why(not implying its of lower quality, just want your reasons) i personally wouldnt buy the s8 UNTIL BLU REBRANDS IT :p
I have always been a big fan of Gionee, one of my first Chinese phones that wasn’t a cheap knockoff was a Gionee. For me here is some things that I loved about the S8 and Gionee in general:
– I love the loop metal design, it allows for a clean look around the entire phone without antenna lines or plastic panels in the back (think Iphone 6 or MX5). It also makes it stand out a bit when you look at it.
– I love how it felt in the hand. It was slim and well made.
– Storage/Memory. Gionee isn’t skimping here they offer 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal memory and it has an SD card for those that like that (not important to me).
– Display. The S8 had one of the most beautiful AMOLED display’s I have ever seen.
– The camera. I have never used a Gionee with a bad camera and some have been excellent (E7/E8). This is one area Gionee excels in. They use top notch components (sensors and lenses) and have good optimization. The camera on the S8 was one of the best and fastest I used at MWC (Galaxy S7 was amazing too).
– Colors. With Xiaomi I will have to wait at least 6 months to get a color other than white, I am so sick of white phones.
– LTE Bands – The Gionee rep told me it will have full support for both US and European LTE (including band 17 and 20).
– Accessories. I love that Gionee gives you everything in the box you need to get started including at least one case (often times 2), earbuds, otg cable, screen protectors etc. It’s a nice touch.
ok i understand, will you buy it as gionee or blu? stop influencing me now i feel like i want to buy one :/
I want to wait for Meizu Mx6 to be announced before I make any decisions. My MX5 is still going strong so I don’t “need” a phone right now, just want one lol. Around May-July I’ll probably buy one. If the Blu version is out by then I’ll get that one, mainly because they are easier to find.
thats what i was just about to get to, how the hel do you get your hands on a gionee, i envy you you know what you want im here getting dzzled and confused by all these smartphones i dot know what to pick, i know i want something that can manage gaming well and have kiler battery life, and probably be my phone for 1-2 years lol
Very few resellers have new Gionee models and if they do they are incredibly expensive. When I do buy Gionees I usually get them in China when I go there for business.
damn but the rom you gonna get a chinese one, you then root it?
I buy it from the same shop usually, the guy there installs the Play Store, roots it and switches it to the English ROM.
woah wait !
they give ear buds ?! as in ear phones ?!
Yea when you buy a Blu or Gionee they give you everything you need in the box. Now the quality of those earbuds is never consistent. Some I have used are very good, others are decent at best. But here check out this unboxing to see everything they give:
ohh .. mann !
no wonder you love Gionee !
now i want them in Pakistan as well ! (too bad Qmobile rebrands some of their phones here :/)
There is no saying when. Xiaomi won’t update just to update and say they have the latest. They update when they know it works across all their supported devices. It’s less work for them and better for the consumer in the long run. Companies like Samsung will release it to say they have it and then never fix any of the issues from it.
Sounds like a good strategy actually. I’m leaning more and more towards the Mi5, got until the summer to decide.
Well, say what you want – for me it’s a big YES. Will wait few months for the price to drop below 300$ (entry model) at the re-selleing websites and will buy this one surely!
Can’t see any video
Is it just me, or is the video not in the article?
i don’t get the point of this video… you just read the specs with the phone in the hand… great!
you could browse the menu, see if there was new things, check the Locale and languages… open apps, switch between them… see how fast it is…
but no…, you thought holding the phone while reading all the specs were enough…
The impressive aspect is the price for a SD820 based phone with fairly nice specs and quality.
huge chin on the bottom, make it looks like a Chinese knock-off for a Galaxy phone.
The shiny plastic is disgusting and cheap looking. Hope there will be matt and textured options.
That’s glass.
It is a bit plain looking , can break ,attracts fingerprints and in white is a bit too feminine but the shape is rather nice and should be comfortable.
Ofc the front it like a LeTv with huge upper and lower bezels and a pimple on the chin.
One user just pasted screenshot from chinese offical webstore about LTE bands (http://bit.ly/1S0WbXG) but I have to say, I wasn’t able to find that info anywhere. So dunno…
If that is true it’s a game changer and would mean support for virtually every network in the world.
OMG that is it. THANK YOU FOR BAND 20, now everyone can buy it in EU GOD BLESS THE MILLET PRAISE LEI JUN
Yea I saw that but if you look at the full list of networks in () it says “uncertain”. I hope it is correct but until I see it official from Xiaomi themselves I don’t want to get my hopes up.
Ok. When you hear the news please post it hear, thanks.
According to the Chinese website, it’s just 1,3 and 7. But that doesn’t mean they won’t have an international model with other bands as well.
Thanks for notifying. Like you said yesterday i’m pretty safe on EE with bands 3 & 7 – so should be alright.
Apparently they have released an app to unlock the bootloader too. Wondering when people will try this.
Indeed. He pasted another one (bit.ly/1UlYy7L). So fingers crossed (I would be happy even with 1/2 of those bands :))

What specs were you hoping for ?
so, have you decided? will it be the Mi5 or the S8??

Ok, you are really getting me into the S8.
