OnePlus fans suggest their dream OnePus 3 specs to Pete Lau

oneplus 3 render leaked

The OnePlus 3 is due to launch in June-July, so what will the specifications be? Well Pete Lau has sat down with Indian OnePlus fans to discuss their dream specs and suggest a few options they could have.

At a meeting with OnePlus fans in India, Pete Lau spoke about the OP3 and offered the fans a chance to voice their dream hardware specs for the new flagship phone. During the talk Lau offered the phone could run either 4GB RAM and 128GB memory or 6GB RAM or 64GB memory, to which fans choose less RAM and more memory (sensible).

At the end of the discussion the fans final specs for their dream OP3 were written on a whiteboard. Let’s see what you think of these possible hardware parameters:

Gizchina News of the week

Possible OP3 specifications;

  • Full HD AMOLED screen
  • Thinner phone size
  • HDMI connectivity
  • 128 GB internal memory
  • A 16-megapixel camera
  • 24-hour battery life on full charge
  • Curved screen like in Samsung Galaxy S6
  • Stereo speakers in front
  • Near field communication (NFC)

I have to agree with most of the details here, however the curved display could be ditched in favour for a quality OIS system. What do you think of these specs? Is there anything that you would add?

Why thinner. OP2 thickness is fine,1cm isn’t bad, squeeze in as much battery as possible.

      March 2, 2016

9.9mm (OP2) is way to thick for a 2016 phone. Should be at least under 8mm, that is one of the biggest reasons I could never own a OP (the other being the invite system). Their devices are too bulky for me.

      • MattD
        March 2, 2016

9.9mm is not bad per se, the problem here is their work around to have removable back panel to sell the bamboo back, but in a way made to negate the chance to have a removable battery… Result: phone as thick as possible, but with a rather small battery! And this is totally retarded: with a thickness of around 8mm you can put a big removable battery and you can still sell your bamboo backs, and everyone’s happy!

I don’t need or want a removable battery. I would much prefer a slimmer phone.

          • MattD
            March 2, 2016

I don’t understand the urge to have a not removable battery: if you want, you can take advantage of the feature, otherwise you keep your battery locked in… I see only pros and no cons, unless you choose to believe in the usual lie “if we use a not removable battery, we can put a bigger battery, make the phone slimmer, and we can save puppies from starving… You don’t want puppies to starve, right?!”.

However, the point was that oneplus, to seal the battery inside, made the phone 3mm thicker than needed, and that sure is retarded by every mean, else you like removable batteries or not.

            • balcobomber25
              March 2, 2016

I haven’t had a need to remove a battery since the beginning days of Android when battery pulls were needed to reset phones. It is a completely useless feature to me. And personally I would prefer a unibody phone which doesn’t have a removable back, it is more durable.

      • Joel Adames
        March 2, 2016

If borders and design were ergonomically correct (read: rounded) I think some thicker phones wouldn’t suffer too much just for being thick if they are kind on the hand and great on battery life performance. I would love a 9.3 if it had a 4600mah+ good a for a full 8-9 SOT and 2 full days of normal use.

      • Rob
        March 2, 2016

Is that extra mm or 2 really going to make a difference?
Compared to some phones like the Ulefone power or the new S7 edge, sure the OP2’s battery to size ratio is looking rather bad.
        OP2: 3300mAh with 9.9mm
        S7 edge: 3600mAh with 7.7mm
        Ulefone power: 6050mAh with 9.5mm

So if Oneplus 3 can get 4000+ at least with a <9mm thickness, I'd be happy with that. But it being thicker by a mm isn't going to turn off the majority of buyers. Oneplus customers usually are more power-users, whether it is 7,8 or 9 mm thick isn't on the top of most's priority list.

        • balcobomber25
          March 2, 2016

For me it makes a huge difference the way it feels in my hand.

    • Nilzie
      March 2, 2016

I think slimness is the most important dimension. Its the measurement which matters most because it doesnt make the phone feel bulky in the pocket

  3. March 2, 2016

+ removable battery, infrared. No curved display….

  4. Adam Irvine
    March 2, 2016

IR Blaster, NO curved display, like you said Andi, would be better with a decent OIS system like Xiaomi have wedged into the Mi5, surely it’s a given that it should have a fingerprint scanner (and should be a front facing one at that too!) and should also make full use of a SD820. 5.5″ Screen too…

As if they’d listen to anyone anyway, I remember reading that Pete Lau had removed NFC from the OP2 because he believed that it was an unnecessary technology so even if the hordes of fans at the time were banging on about NFC being the future of contactless payments etc, he wouldn’t have given 2 sh1ts anyway!

  5. balcobomber25
    March 2, 2016

It doesn’t matter what the specs are, if you don’t finally ditch the invite system only the hardcore OP fanboys are going to buy it. Casual phone buyers will skip right over it and get a Honor, Meizu, Xiaomi or Nubia.

    • Nilzie
      March 2, 2016

You missed one thing. Oneplus China does not have an invite system. Xiaomi, meizu etc is usually sold on the gray market as their phones are not officially available outside China and India, unlike Oneplus.

You can get a China Oneplus without an invite the same way ypu get a xiaomi

      • balcobomber25
        March 2, 2016

Xiaomi phones are sold officially outside of China in numerous countries.

    • Simon Smith
      March 3, 2016

I still think the invite system makes sense. It gives the impression of scarcity and rarity which increases the appeal of the phone. You can still get one, and once the initial launch period is over the invite system is removed anyway.

      • balcobomber25
        March 3, 2016

Many that I know view it as a hassle and a nuisance, it has the opposite effect of you it decreases the appeal for OP . By the time the invite system is gone so too are the casual customers, and they move on to other brands that aren’t as “exclusive”. The invite system worked when demand was high because the One was the first CM phone available to the masses. Once they lost CM they lost the high demand as well.

meh id prefer more ram less storage

    • Adam Irvine
      March 2, 2016

      Really? Why??

The 4GB RAM, 128GB ROM sounds absolutely spot on to me… What the hell would I do with 6GB of RAM!?

      • Assefa Hanson
        March 2, 2016

well 64 is enough for me personally.. im asuming this doesnt have an sd slot? but you can work around storage space move around some files to comp/cloud but you cant with ram

        • Joel Adames
          March 2, 2016

Spot on! I will always say if price can allow it the more the merrier it is 😀

        • Adam Irvine
          March 2, 2016

I have 64gb in my OPO now, whilst I agree with you mostly, moving things around is sometimes not convenient, consider someone going travelling for ‘x’ amount of time, the amount of pictures and video they would take and without having a tip top data plan to be able to sync up to the cloud all the time (usually cloud storage is at extra expense anyway) they may want the 128gb option, my reason is because I foresee things getting bigger and bigger, games for example are getting bigger all the time with the larger textures and generally improved graphics we’re experiencing now, movies, and people want FLAC for their audio now!

6GB of RAM would just be a ‘marketting wowaweewaa moment’ I saw the Vivo with it’s 6GB RAM and thought it sounds as tacky as it looks… It’s just proper overkill!

Personally, I’d love both, but then the price will be silly and would potentially see OnePlus disappear…

          • imdaddymc
            March 2, 2016

you can always add more memory to increase the capacity, you cant add more ram to the phone.

      • Joel Adames
        March 2, 2016

Is a marketing point, why buy this if another phone with more street credit can offer the same?
I mean get a xiaomi then!?
But you have to make it appealing, or else all phones will be the same at the end.

Root permissions as standard so no need to unroot to install an update and subsequently re-root

    • Adam Irvine
      March 2, 2016

I disagree there to be honest, one of the main reasons for me going for the OnePlus One originally was so that I could have all the creme of CyanogenMod but my Banking app would work out of the box without having to faff about unrooting it etc…

I’ve had this discussion a million times with regards to the pros and cons of root permissions etc and so I’m not about to get into either but if they could make it so you could literally just switch root on and off and like you say, updates would’nt be affected then ye, that’d be great..

      • MattD
        March 2, 2016

If I’m not wrong, this feature has been included into jiayu phones for a long time, so it shouldn’t be a problem

  8. Joel Adames
    March 2, 2016

    OK,
    1. Ditch invite system stupidity
    2. Do not go too carried away with superslim
    3. Do put big battery hence #2 (4000+mah???)
    4. Good camera +ois+pdaf+ low aperture and +1.5pixels (then similar for front can)
    5. NFC
    6. Stereo FRONT DUAL speakers
    7. 6gbRam +64gb storage + Sd-reader (mind my future proofing)
    8. Fhd if less than 5.4″ screen QHd if 5.5 or more and I don’t mind the curved displays (I do like)
    9. Hi-Fi audio
    10. Vanilla ANDROID 6 let us mess up with it with some launcher.
    11. Fast charge a must.

HDMI ? For real I mean? Miracast anyone??

    • Marius Cirsta
      March 2, 2016

6 GB of RAM is really useless today and by the time it’s going to be needed the phone will be obsolete anyways and not receive any updates.
People were right, 128 GB is something that you can at least use ( in theory )

        • balcobomber25
          March 2, 2016

It’s a $30 upgrade for the company but those savings are never passed onto the consumer. In fact most phones charge a huge premium for having more RAM.

        • Marius Cirsta
          March 2, 2016

More RAM actually uses more power too but it’s also a waste you know … it just sits there using power and getting bored 😀

          • Joel Adames
            March 2, 2016

Well is not like it all gas to be in use at all times, that why they hire engineers to do the smart stuff, so it could be there when you need it and off when you don’t. This discussions regarding if more ram or not wear me off a little because at this time LAST year we were at 2gbRams not 512mb …
So no, saying it wont be neccesary is not for me. Besides all the app developers just keep increasing the resources demand in their apps

      • Assefa Hanson
        March 2, 2016

i disagree the xplay 3s had 3gb ram/qhd/snap801 even thought is runs jelly been the phone is still not obsolete, 801 still beats many current 64bit chips lol and thats was in 2013.

u will never use 128gb your sure to get a considerable amount of it fragmented never to be recovered

youll mostly likely use a full 6gb ram over the years vs 128

I think the big problem for OnePlus when it comes to price is that their software just isn’t there to justify a big price tag…

I don’t get the point of having HDMI. I assume it’s not going to be a full size HDMI port as that would make the phone a lot thicker. Whereas if they use a mini-hdmi port you would need to use an adapter. Therefore it would make more sense to use the USB type C port with an adapter to full size HDMI.

    • Joel Adames
      March 2, 2016

It would make more sense to allow the miracast or some similar feature…

    • Simon Smith
      March 3, 2016

HDMI is unnecessary if they just make the USB-C actual USB-C, and not the USB 2 with a USB-C connector like the OP2.
USB-C can support HDMI out – there is no need for a 2nd connector.

HDMI compatibility just means the USB-C actually supports the USB-C protocol.

Having HDMI compatibility is a must for me. I need to be able to plug my phone into my TV. I was disappointed to find out the OP2 had a fake USB-C port.

I would actually consider buying the OP3, I am buying a new phone this summer and have not made up my mind yet. For them to win me over, someone who has been a critic of theirs, here’s what it would need to have:

    1. 5.5 inches FHD
    2. >8 mm with a great design.
    3. Camera with 6P Lens, PDAF, Laser and OIS (don’t care about the sensor)
    4. Good optimization
    5. SD 820
    6. 4 GB RAM
    7. 64 GB ROM
    8. Front Fingerprint
    9. Quick Charge.
    10. > 2999 yuan.

If it had all of that I would be very interested in the next OP.

    • MattD

With the wave of VR media coming our way, and a VR cardboard piece you’d have a valid low cost alternative to a more expensive VR headset. Would be very interesting to be able and capture part of that market.

I ll tell you a little story: When there were only 1gb ram phones and a handful of 2gb ram phones, a phone maker suddenly came up with a 3gb ram model and everyone argued that its juz a gimmik. And as days passed by 3gb ram became so common and then people started complaining about phone having just 2gb ram. Then another phone company came with 4gb phone. And again people started discussing ‘i have a desktop that has less than 4gb and it runs perfectly fine for me. Why would a phone need 4gb’ and then after somedays people stopped blamming 4gb ram phones and some even started to appreciate them and said that only 3gb -4gb ram phones can handle this ram hungry android platform (eventhough its a gimmik i guess). Story to be continued….

      That’s called marketing.

The science behind the process to create something, to make you think that you “need” it, and then tell you that they can provide it for you for just a little of your money.

Now you’re happy because all your “needs” are satisfied, but tomorrow they will tell you that you “need” something else, and sure enough they already made it for you.

And this can go on and on forever.

    My ideal phone

5.5 inch screen with rounded body/edges for easier grip
Full HD AMOLED (gorilla glass 4)
    4GB RAM
    64GB with SDCARD slot
HIFI Audio with dual front speakers
    Removable 4000 mah battery
16 MP with Laser and OIS primary camera and dual tone led flash + Physical camera button
fingerprint scanner at the back so as to keep size of overall phone small
on screen button (again to reduce the size of the phone)
    IR
silent and sound button as in the Oneplus X
    Led light notification
    Quick charge (like Oppo VOCC)
    Snapdragon 820
slim and sleek like the oneplus x white and gold

  25. Simon Smith
    March 3, 2016

Those specs look pretty good. The important things I feel would be:

    Snapdragon 820
    4GB RAM (more is unnecessary)
    128GM option
5.5″ HD AMOLED Gorilla glass 4 screen
Fingerprint scanner (front or back, doesn’t matter)
    Quick charge
Full USB C capabilities (including video out to connect to HDMI)
Battery large enough to last 24 hours (and removable)

But the big one…don’t change the design. There is no need, you’ve found the perfect formula! Also, make sure it retains the dual sim support.

i dont get the hype about dual front speakers. do people really listen to music from their phone on loudspeakers? even if there would be two, the quality would still suck and i would always prefer a headphone or hifi system plugged into the 3,5mm jack.
the biggest minus for me is the incredible plus on size.
have you seen the lenovo k4 note? that thing is fucking huge due to the dual front speakers. buy some decent headphones and or a decent stereo with aux in or even bluetooth or nfc and you wont need dual front speakers…. god damnit, design and size, guys!!!

based on list in the article…
    * HDMI connectivity?! i can’t agree on this. i don’t think it’s that useful.
    * fast charging <– this is a welcome and should be available if it's running SD processors
    * OIS on camera and fast camera launch+capture
    * if really 128GB, then i guess i can forego microSD
    * at least 5.5" screen with really small bezel. oneplus one had kinda huge bezel

but i think most important is the price. it is what makes OnePlus stand out — premium phone at affordable price

I agree with those who are against front-facing speakers. I like music but use headphones or bluetooth speakers. I prefer the smallest possible form factor. Most users don’t listen to music as much as they use their phones for other things and it is nice to have something compact to hold and carry around. I’ve always disliked the look of Sony phones because of their length. Too much real estate relative to screen size.
