Xiaomi has filed an application with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) in India, seeking approval to set up Xiaomi-only brand stores across the country.
While some of Xiaomi’s phones are available via a select few offline retailers, a real business Xiaomi does is via online stores, such as Flipkart and Amazon.
Any international company that wants to operate retail stores in India is required to to manufacture 30% of its goods in the country by law. Xiaomi should be well past that by now.

In fact, Hugo Barra revealed at the Redmi Note 3 conference in India that the majority of the phones being sold in the country are ‘made in India’.
In related news, Xiaomi just set up two more manufacturing plants in India. The brand is set to launch a bunch of phones in the country this year, with the Mi 5 pegged for launch next month.
