Cubot launching the X17S and Dinosaur phones soon, here are the details

Phone maker Cubot plan to launch two new phones later in the year, one being the Cubot X17S and the other the Cubot Dinosaur.

With a name like Dinosaur I thought of a large phone, with rugged design and perhaps even a large battery and even leather rear panel, but the phone in the photos looks nothing like that.

Instead the Dinosaur is a 5.5-inch phone with HD display, quad-core MT6735A chipset and design that is similar to the Xiaomi Redmi 3. The plastic bodied phone will support LTE bands 1/3/7/20 and comes with 3GB RAM, 16GB memory and Android 6.0 out of the box.

Other Jurassic features are Hotknot, 2 mega-pixel front camera, a 8 mega-pixel rear camera and 4150mAh battery.

The Cubot X17S looks like a few of the phones that Cubot already released with a metal chassis and dual glass panel design measuring only 6.2mm thick.

The X17S has FDD LTE support for bands 1/3/7/20, has a quad-core MT6735 chipset, 3GB RAM and a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 display. Android 5.1 comes on the X17S which we hope will see an Android 6.0 update in the future, and the thin phone has a 2500mAh battery inside.

Expect Cubot to launch both phones in April, which is shaping up to be one busy month for Chinese smartphone fans!

Cubots X16 and X17 looked really nice. If they released something like those with 5,5″ I would probably give cubot a chance…

i respect CUBOT for making efforts … but they are still v.toothless , they need to Learn from Ulefone who are making strides in all fields despite their short-comings !

    yea. i know. they are TERRIBLE. i just love the way they are making efforts. even if they fail with ALL their upcoming phones…. one thing atleast i can remember them by is the sheer effort they made to stay level with up and coming tech.

Cubot is spreading ambiguous information about the rear camera sensor.
Because there is no brand mentioned on their website, I asked them about the brand and version of the rear camera. After quite some insisting, their engineering department revealed to me that the camera is a 13 MP Omnivision OV13850 (released in 2013). They say it’s the same as the X17 camera. In se not a bad camera, used in f.i. the Jiayu G4S, Ecoo E04, Lenovo K3 Note, Huawei P8 Light, Ulefone Paris, Elephone P9000 etc. But after further investigation I confronted them with the specs mentioned on their website: f/2.2 CMOS 1/2.7” sensor size. All of the above mentioned camera’s have f/2.0. Looking at the spec sheet of the Omnivision OV13850, the sensor size is: 1/3.06” and not CMOS but PureCel. I confronted Cubot with this information, but they stick to their statement that the camera is indeed an Omnivision OV13850. I wonder why companies like Cubot are not eager, even mysterious to publish the brand and version of their camera’s for certain phones. In 2 other reviews on the web I read that the X17 camera is a modified Sony Exmor camera, without mentioning the version. Who can clarify?

Today Cubot mailed me that de camera is not an Omnivision OV13850 but an Omnivision OV13860. My doubts expressed in my previous post remain.
The Omnivision OV13860 is used in the OnePlus 2, which has an f2.0 lens aperture. Cubot states that the lens has f2.2 max. aperture. Omnivision OV13860 has an 1/2.6” sensor, Cubot states 1/2.7”. So still doubts. If it is really an OV13860, this sensor is on par with the Sony IMX214
