Teclast X80 Power – full metal build evolution

Smaller tablets are lately not among the most desired ones due to various reasons, but Teclast managed to get some success with the X80 Pro and Plus models. It can be attributed to reasonable build quality, quite affordable pricing and last but not least the dualboot capability. Still the design and the build itself has been pretty budget-like and to alleviate this the maker comes with the new full metal build in Teclast X80 Power.

The innards of the tablet remained exactly the same as the X80 Pro model, you can find Intel Atom X5-8300 with 2 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC storage, microSD slot, HDMI output and 8-inch FHD screen with 1920×1200 resolution (so aspect ratio 16:10). And of course the aforementioned dualboot with Android 5.1 / Windows 10 system onboard.

The big difference comes with the chassis, where Teclast X80 Power adopts full metal build with slimmer design (7.2mm vs 10mm in the old model) and smaller 4.5mm bezels around the display. The build is more along the premium lines and should almost rival the similar looking Xiaomi MiPad 2 (which offers 4:3 aspect ratio though).

With the price it gets a bit trickier, because according to first reseller listings the Teclast X80 Power will be available for something around 135$ while the almost identical X80 Pro hovers around 110$ and the lower resolution X80 Plus can be found in some deals for crazy 80$. On the other hand the rivaling Xiaomi MiPad attacks often the 200$ barrier and lacks some crucial things like expandable storage or dualboot option.

I’m probably the only one (in the known universe) who would love to have one with 2G/ 3G radios, GPS, and decent cameras.

  You’re definitely not alone. But you’d want 4G ‘cos it’s still cheap and…it’s 2016. You don’t want to buy anything 3G or 720P or less than 2GB of RAM. No reason to.
  4G with 2GB of RAM and 1920×1200 resolution is a hundred-dollarish spec now. At 4.5 inch right up through eight inch. And your choice of dual-boot or not.
  4G really feels like fiber for your tablet, beachside. And after you go FHD at over 5 inches, you really can’t go back.

    Question for you: If a tablet is marketed as 4G does that automatically mean it is 2G and 3G also? Can you recommend an 8″ tablet, 1080p, 2G/3G/4G, good GPS (+Glonass?), large battery, decent cameras? Thanks!

Not sure how useful Windows 10 with 2GB RAM and small partition is…and on an 8-inch screen. My other 10″ dual-boot running Win8 with 2GB RAM with a 3735f is plain laggy in Windows – excruciating boot times. And even 10 inches feels tiny for Windows.
Love the size, resolution, and price of this tablet though. 8 inch with 1920×1200 is dynamite and fits in a front pants pocket. At $135, good price.
Seems like you can two ways with this HD 1920×1200, 2GB RAM, 8-inch, $135 basic platform. Which is an awesome pocketable platform.
One way is dual-boot like this Teclast, and you get an HDMI port in the mix as well. But no 3G and just 32GB to share between the two OS’es. That Intel chip gives you dual-boot but robs you of any cellular on the Android side. Big compromise.
The other way, which is where I went, is… no dual-boot…but 4G. Cube makes the T8 Plus, the latest in their full-phone-functionality line. I had Cube Talk79 years ago (iPad Mini size) and I do dig the jumbophone category. I think Cube owns that category. 3G is hard enough to find at 7 and 8 inches; may as well get 4G with full phone functionality as well.
T8 plus is Android 5.1 only, but dual-SIM LTE with full phone functionality, same HD 1920×1200 display, 2GB RAM, 8-inch, $135 basic platform. I get 33K Antutu out of the latest-gen midrange 64-bit 8-core MTK 8783 in it and the LTE makes it just plain fast. Usable but not stellar cameras. Same price. Good latest-gen GPS as well, major step up from the earlier MTK 65xx series GPS. Great in-car navigator and Uber tool – you can even sms and call the driver from it.
Definitely not as slim or pretty as the Teclast. I’ve had Teclast P79HD as part of my 7-inch phone obsession and Teclast slim all-metal construction is gorgeous. Cube T8 Plus is pedestrian white plastic. There is no glamour.
I think where we are right now with tablets and their processors is: dual-boot (which means Intel) means no 3G/4G on the Android side. You have to go Mediatek or other non-dual-boot to get 4G on the Android side. Luckily the MTK is also cheap. But Mediatek won’t dual-boot.
My new standard for pocketable is FHD, LTE with good GPS, and maximum 8 inch, in 16:10. MiPad’s 4:3 iPad Mini form factor is not happy in a front pocket; it’s too wide and wants to break or bend. But 8 inch at 16:10, like this Teclast and Cube T8 series, is fine in a front pocket. Other 8-inch devices at 16:9 (regular FHD) probably even better.
IMHO, this 8-inch 16:10 ratio is the biggest you can go before you have to carry a bag, which I don’t do.
If Teclast would add dual-SIM LTE and phone functionality on the Android side to this new device, I’d pay $185 for it just to have the bonus Win10 capability as a lark. And to have the Teclast slimness and gorgeousness in my pocket.
We are all waiting for pocketable dual-boot with 4G and GPS, are we not?
I think we’re going to be waiting for a while…

  2GB ram to run a full OS is just plain stupid in the year 2016. People would only run a full blown OS to do things that is better with such a system.
  Even Android is so-so (in 2016) with only 2 GB ram.
