Meizu Pro 6 officially enters into the fray today

Meizu Pro 6

The new flasghip Meizu Pro 6  is finally here for real and starting today it’s available  in various Chinese retail stores. So there is a glimmer of hope for us not directly in China, that it also means swift availability in the reseller stocks with worldwide reach.

That would inevitably also mean some unfortunate price jump, because i doubt the resellers will match the 2499 yuan (384$) Chinese price for the 32 GB model. Not to mention the first customers buying the phone until April 30th are getting free EP21HD headphones in China. Well a man can dream…

Gizchina News of the week

We have covered the Meizu Pro 6 launch quite extensively including the controversies about the alleged subpar specs in comparison to Pro 5, so for those interested in reading up more about it nothing easier than to follow the links to those articles.

I’m still cautiously optimistic about the phone myself, but worried a bit especially about the battery capacity, because the 2560 mAh battery combined with the Helio X25 processor is pretty sketchy on paper. We should get a sample for a review hopefully soonish so all the questions are going to be answered and until then you can check the detailed specs of the phone here.

So we’ll see EP21HD headphones sell apart from Meizu phones on resellers.
Bad decision to choose MTK with that battery, seems Meizu is copying Apple in making phones without menu and back keys and now crap batteries :/

Meizu hasn’t used menu and back keys for awhile now. The back key is built into the home button and it actually is one of the best features of Flyme.

Specs are not everything. Meizu grew round 400% YoY between 2014 and 2015. Xiaomi struggled to grow.
Alibaba invested heavily in Meizu stocks and so did MediaTek.
But these people don’t know anything, right?
        Chico does

Part of the Alibaba investment in Meizu was a deal between Alibaba and China Telecom. China Telecom operates on the CDMA 2000 network. The Samsung Exynos doesn’t support this network without a separate modem, the Helios X25 doesn’t need the extra modem. People here care more about spec sheets than common sense.

Found a PCMark score for the Meizu Pro 6 on GizChinaIT.
PCMark simulates real world tasks, how well it does so, hard to say.
    Pro 6 – browsing 6135 , video 4143 , writing 6340 , photo editing 7517 , overall 5899
    Galaxy S7 – browsing 6059 , video 3746 , writing 5601 , photo editing 9348 , overall 5871
    Mate 8 – browsing 8471 , video 5709 , writing 7683 , photo editing 8486 , overall 7493
S7 SD820 and Mate 8 numbers from Anandtech.
Don’t think the Meizu reached full potential in this run as in other benchmarks it scores a bit weak in that review.
The photo editing test is done on the GPU, hence the win for the SD820.

With the slightly slower x20 in the 170$ LeEco , it’s quite a jump in perf from where we were last year at this price point.

Although I have my doubts about the Pro6 maybe if I have time I will stop by my local Meizu store for a look, afterall, it’s a whooping 200m walk.

Urgh. Mine is like… nearly 1km. I’d have to *really* want to go.

      April 25, 2016

Angry Mobile Nerd Hands-on: ok it’s actually built very nice, very oppo-like but still a *much* nicer build than the MX5 and a tad nicer than the Pro5. Easily Meizu’s nicest built phone to date but still I’m not a fan of flyme and the screen size is still a deal breaker for me as I like 5.5″+ phones.

Pro 6 already is a walking dead, especially after this week’s launches.

    • MaxPower
      April 23, 2016

It’s still an alternative, but it won’t make big numbers for sure. Less than MX5 and way lesser than MX4

PS: I know, I compared it to the MX series rather than the Pro because that’s what it really is (except for the price)

      • balcobomber25
        April 23, 2016

We shall see. The demand is reportedly very high in China for it. I think a lot of people here are going to be surprised by the sales of this phone. Keep in mind specs are only for geeks like us.

        • MaxPower
          April 23, 2016

Agree with specs, but what about price?

          • balcobomber25
            April 23, 2016

Price is cheaper than the Pro 5 launched for and a lot cheaper than the phones from Huawei and Samsung. It’s also cheaper than the Oppo R9 with an even weaker SoC.

            • MaxPower
              April 23, 2016

Huawei has a tons of phones to satisfy any kind of pocket.
              Hard to compete with them.

Oppo is like Apple in China, lot of fans regardless what kind of phone they are selling.

Meizu has to compete with Xiaomi, LeEcho, Lenovo, Oneplus.
For the same price Zuk offers a lot more, LeEcho offers the same specs for half the price…
I don’t know man, I see it hard this year for Meizu.
I had no problem saying that their MX5 was one the best phone of last year flagships, I also voted it on GizChina poll.
This Pro6? A nice phone that should have priced at 1799 yuan at best

            • balcobomber25
              April 23, 2016

I think you underestimate the following Meizu has. They may not be as big as some of those others you mentioned but they have millions of fans that will buy their devices just like Xioami and Oppo.

            • MaxPower
              April 23, 2016

I’m not underestimating them, I’ve put them in the same league of Xiaomi, LeTV, Oneplus and Lenovo.

They have managed to provide phones as good and cheap at the same time as those companies above (MX4,M1,M2,Metal,MX5…)

This one, in my opinion, has been priced badly and not because it won’t worth the money they are asking for but mostly because the competition with the companies mentioned above is going to be tougher this year.

              We shall see…

            • balcobomber25
              April 23, 2016

I disagree I think it’s priced competitively with all of those brands.

Who knows with Oppo. They took a year off from the Find series last year. I would guess we will see a Find 9 around the same time as One Plus 3.

              April 26, 2016

I’m sure it will be nice. Guess we shall find out in June.

              April 24, 2016

Yeah, Meizu’s quite a respected local brand. In fact I know more than a few people who hold them in higher regard than Xiaomi. The Pro 6 will not struggle to sell. There’s absolutely a market for it.

            • balcobomber25
              April 24, 2016

The market in China is so big that all of these brands can release new flagship and still sell in the millions. Xiaomi and Oppo aren’t the only brands with loyal fans that number in the millions.

Ironic that we can buy an x25 equipped phone before an x20 one! Wasn’t expecting this for another couple of months so will be interesting to see how this chip fares in day to day use.

Let’s see what’s the best camera and battery

        Meizu for design

        • balcobomber25
          April 23, 2016

          The way I score it:

          Zuk:
          Network coverage
          Battery on paper
          Availability

          Meizu:
          Design
          Software

Really gonna come down to the camera for me.

              April 23, 2016

my phone = Lumia 1020. sorry about camera pro.

i dont understand why you walking backwards with meizu. No language available . frugal battery, ugly design cloned, old imx230 camera still 29.97fps, mid-range gpu. and expensive phone.

            • balcobomber25
              April 24, 2016

              1. No language available – English is available, that is the only language I need.
              2. Frugal Battery – My MX5 lasts a day and half on battery. The Pro 6 is yet to be seen.
              3. Ugly design clones – There is no phone available today that looks like the Pro 6. It is the most unique design available.
              4. 29.97fps – I don’t use it for video much, that is a feature I don’t need.
              5. Mid Range GPU – I don’t play games on my phone, I have an Xbox One for that.
              6. Expensive – Someone with a 1020 is calling another phone expensive? That is funny. The Pro 6 costs nearly $300 less than the 1020 launched for.

              April 24, 2016

much fanaticism to believe all this at stratospheric price

you do not need any of that, ulefone = cheap !

I would buy this phone because of the look – in my opinion it’s the best looking phone right now. The price of 300-400 EUR is quite reasonable and the specs are more than enough for 90-95% users 🙂 I’ll wait till it come to Europe and maybe swap my sam s6 to this:)

Just came here to say once again: FU Meizu. For years I haven’t been waiting so much for a piece of hardware and they delivered such a dissapointment.
I’d be fine with X25 or battery or camera… but lack of high-end DAC/amp (namely ESS+TI) and MicroSD is a total dissapointment.
Seriously I don’t give a damn if they will present Pro 6 Plus or something similiar in few months time, because it will be again with 5.7 or 6.0″ display.
If they update the Pro 6 with microSD and ESS/TI audio stuff, then I’ll consider buying it.

    • Alexis T
      April 25, 2016

eric, you should face reality, your next HiFi phone won’t be from Meizu ^^ BTW, no HiFi phone has been announced atm, and every flagship already released in 2016 lack HiFi. Maybe later in MX6 ? or OP3 ? or Find 9 ?

It seems audiophiles have been forgotten by chinese market in S1 2016 (except by Ulephone and its Vienna but… lol can’t be to the detriment of every other aspect of the phone).

      • erictheking87
        April 26, 2016

Yeah, it looks like you’re right. Honestly I don’t care if it will be Meizu, Lenovo, Vivo, LG or whoever… I’m loving the concept of Sony Xperia Compact series, and I just want a 5.0″ or less flagship (or just good specced) phone with ESS/TI audio (or equivalent) and mSD cards slot.
From all manufacturers over the world why anyone couldn’t do such a thing?

        • Alexis T
          April 26, 2016

Why don’t you get a V10 ? they’re available at $530 on amazon right now.

            April 26, 2016

Because is waaayyyy too big for me. it’s 5.7″ and I want 5.0″ or less.

            • Alexis T
              April 26, 2016

Aw c’mon… you’ll never find any mini phone with HiFi… that’s flagship grade material, only shipped with 5,5″+ screen. You’re hurting yourself ^^
