While the Intel processors are totally taking over the tablet and convertible market, their effort in gaining some foothold in phones has failed spectacularly. Even though major players like Asus and Lenovo are their official partners both companies totally dumped the Intel mobile processors in their upcoming models in favor of Qualcomm and Mediatek.
Gizchina News of the week
Latest nail in the Intel phone coffin is the announcement of the Asus CEO Jerry Shen, who stated that none of the Asus Zenfone 3 models is going to feature the Intel processor. The new Zenfone generation should be coming in June and about 90 % of the lineup will be equipped with Qualcomm CPUs, the remaining 10 % with Mediatek ones.
Asus expects that roughly two thirds of the Zenfone 3 production will be focused on the Zenfone 3 Max model while the Deluxe and Standard editions will occupy only one third. The new Asus models are expected to stay within the 1699-1999 yuan price range ($260-$306) and as mentioned before should arrive somewhere in June.
Bit of a disappointment as having x86 based cpu’s in theory means it’s easier to port desktop systems to devices.
Intel has been downsizing their operations of late, so it’s not a surprise that on flows to manufacturers using their components.
You say that but no one has really bothered porting anything thus far, that may be part of the problem – a lack of integration.
As far as I’m aware we will start seeing less Intel chips in tablets due to Intel dropping their Atom line so this is hardly a surprise. Their whole phone/tablet venture has been an expensive disaster.
Probably good since Intel is in the pockets of Microsoft which results in bad service to the likes of Linux Users.
Too right, Intel are ruining the tablet market. There are virtually no proper android tablets and no chip maker has released a single decent tablet chip over the last 12 months. Intel have been trying to do to the tablet market what they did to the desktop market to AMD. Good riddance I say, as a general rule I won’t touch a product with “Intel inside”.
yeah … read an article on a local website about Intel completely closing their mobile processors’ departments (sans the Laptop CPUs)…
oh and interesting news , the MTK stock will be suspended tomorrow in lieu of some MASSIVE news concerning the taiwanese chip-maker…. word on the street is , they’re taking over whats left of INTEL’s Mobile CPU department !
