UMI about to sign a contract with Mediatek concerning using Helio P20 in UMI Plus Extreme

During the first half of 2016 the Helio P10 processor has become quite a hit among the chinese producers and made its way into quite some phone models. UMI successfully used it within their UMI Super and UMI Plus models and the midrange perfomance didn’t disappont.

But for their upcoming UMI Plus Extreme they are planning to use the bigger gun and the Helio P20 could be exactly that. Clocked at 2,3 GHz it should be roughly 20% more powerful than the P10 and the new Mali-T880MP GPU should kick the ass of the older Mali-T860MP2 too.

Processor is of course the main culprit concerning the whole performance of the phone and affects even stuff like the camera and its processing. Thanks to the 16nm FinFET technology the Helio P20 should be more power efficient and generating less heat.

Gizchina News of the week

So no wonder UMI are trying to reach out to Mediatek and finalize the contract with Mediatek about the usage of Helio P20 in the UMI Plus Extreme. And according to the latest information they are close, so the UMI Plus Extreme with Helio P20, 6 GB RAM, 64 GB ROM and Android 7.0 Nougat should be a reality very soon. Priced around $300 dollars it looks interesting and we will surely keep a close eye on it in the coming days. Check out our Facebook page.

Well seriously now the P20 is just using some A53 core, granted they run at 2.3 GHz and should be quite efficient but guess what my Redmi Note 2 has the X10 with 8 of these running at 2.15 GHz…. yes the GPU is probably much weaker but still ….
At this price of $300 LeEco has launched the Snapdragon 821 powered LeEco 3 Pro so I’m hardly impressed by this UMI.
OK so yes, it has 6 GB of RAM but screw that, what do I need all that RAM for ? I see this RAM values going through the roof but at the end of the day RAM consumes power and programmers should strive to use the least amount of RAM possible.
I have 2 GB of RAM and it’s more than enough for me. Let’s say you’re a power user that does a lot of multi-tasking and double that to 4 GB but 6 GB or even 8 GB is ridiculous.
Put in a good SOC ( at least an X20 ) instead of a silly amount of RAM, then pack a good capacity battery ( at least 4000 mAh ) and optimize as much as possible for battery life because this is the real problem , phones that you can use just a few hours a day. Just cut it out with these silly specs please.

      here’s my two cents.
While I like fast CPU and RAM (my apollo lite literally flies thanks to x20 and dual channel ram), I don’t like the heat those things produce. It’s not to the point of being too hot to touch but it’s warm enough to annoy me. So I’ll personally take a cool yet fast enough CPU rather than the most powerful and hottest one out there.

This P20, which has A53 in 16nm process and decent GPU for the resolution seems like it’ll fit the bill but I’m not seeing myself buying the phone with it in at $300 and upward. It’s a shame.

Agree with your stance on RAM but being dual channel really makes a difference so I’ll probably get phones with dual channel 4GB ram nowadays at least.

Snapdragon 625 would have been a better choice…
