UMiDigi Z Pro Unboxing, Hands On, First Impressions!

I received the UMi Z Pro (or UMiDigi with their recent rebranding) a few days ago and I’m pretty excited about the dual camera setup here as this is a true dual camera setup, Huawei P9/iPhone 7 style.

I wonder if the dual camera setup here will allow the UMiDigi Z Pro to compete with the big guys in photo quality. But before that, let’s get the unboxing out of the way!

UMiDigi Z Pro Unboxing

The unboxing experience here is very similar to Yash’s unboxing of the original UMi Z. I was given not only the phone, but two additional cases and a tempered glass screen protector. There is no flip case here, but I’m not complaining. Both cases are rather flimsy but will do an adequate job protecting from drops.

UMiDigi Z Pro Hands On

My UMiDigi Z Pro came in grey and I don’t know if its my eyes playing tricks on my sense of touch, but the grey Z Pro feels ever so slightly better than my golden UMi Z.

Other than that real or perceived difference in feel, the UMiDigi Z Pro is exactly the same as the UMi Z which is not a bad thing. Its hefty, not Mi Mix style compact, but feels exquisite. My grey Z Pro feels amazing in hand, I like it a lot better than my gold UMi Z.

UMiDigi Z Pro First Impressions

Turning on the phone and we are greeted with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, no Nougat or OTA to Nougat yet. I’m slightly surprised it doesn’t come with Nougat since the recently released budget Cubot Rainbow 2 runs Nougat surprisingly well on an MTK6580.

UMiDigi Z Pro Final Thoughts

I’m actually quite excited to test out the dual camera setup on the back as I don’t think there is another true dual camera setup at this price point (e.g. 2 identical cameras on the back). It can be had on flash sale at several websites for $250 which is not a bad price for specs like these.

But to be fair it has to be compared to the best value phones in this range (meaning the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 which is $231). I don’t expect too much to be different in the UMiDigi Z Pro vs the UMi Z, but that will have to wait for the full review.

Really? Seems you’ve never heard of a smartphone called the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual which sports Dual 13MP Sony IMX 258 on the rear side. I have the Cool 1 Dual and the camera quality is quite great. And it’s cheaper than the Z Pro you posted about albeit having a slightly weaker SoC (SD 652) compared to the Helio X27 in the Z Pro. But it’s still a very good performer all round. I compared it a lot with the Z Pro before making up my mind to buy the Cool 1 Dual and I’m loving every bit of it.

Why won’t UMI put NFC on its phones?
This omission ruins them. Some of us use Android pay.

  Price probably? Not sure if Android pay is widespread in Asia because if its not, then there’s the reason.

    Who told you MTK chip does not support NFC, there are many MTK chip mobile phone and NFC function, such as ulefone ARMOR.

I have bought both the Umi Plus and the Umi Z from banggood and can say the Z is really a top notch phone. The three things I wasn’t satisfied with on the Plus was the camera and the music curcuits and the sensitivity of the screen. These three minuses on the Plus are now corrected on the Z, the screen is as sensitive as the screen of my Nokia Windows phone, wich is a real premium phone, the camera seems to be quite good. The sound quality is really improved, haven’t really seen this in the advertising and didn’t really think it would have been improved but it is a really good music player now, wich is really important to me. I can honestly recommend this phone instead of the Samsungs and whatever they are called, the Android installed is also really clean without all the unwanted apps from” the other ones”. this Z PRO seems to be a top natch! well down UMI
