Ouch, this hurts! Samsung has been ordered by the Quanzhou Intermediary Court to pay CNY80 million to Huawei after infringing patents that reached a verdict only recently. In dollars, the Korean company has to pay 11.6 million as a compensation for using a 4G license in over 20 of its devices, with the Galaxy S7 being among them!
Gizchina News of the week
Huawei had filed a lawsuit against Samsung back in May in China and the US, and the Korean company responded by filing another lawsuit for infringing IP certification patents. Obviously it’s not the first patent infingement that reaches courts over the past few years, since Huawei has already sought compensation for over 30 million products sold in 2016 that generated $12.7 billion revenue for Samsung.
However after this court ruling, five firms have to stop using Huawei’s copyrighted products and patents. Samsung has to pay obviously the quite large fine, but if you think that their fiscal year had a $2 billion operating profit, then this $11 million penalty is large, but not that hard for the Korean behemoth.
