Poll: Will You Buy The OnePlus 5?

So OnePlus finally released their OnePlus 5 yesterday and now that we’ve all had time to soak up the facts it’s time to decide if we’re going to buy it or not.

After months of speculation, the OnePlus 5 was finally revealed and all the specs released to the public. The big surprise this time around was the total lack of a surprise. We had all seen images of the OP5 well ahead of launch, and the specifications that were suggested by insiders all came true.

This time around the OnePlus 5 has been developed to address an area that OnePlus was struggling with, the camera. The rear of the phone features a dual camera design and is now marketed as a camera-centric flagship.

While the camera is an obvious update, there are some areas that OnePlus have still not quite caught up with the competition. For example, the new phone isn’t waterproof, there are some question marks over the screen and the design is an obvious iPhone knock off and also happens to be almost the same as the Oppo R11.

Regardless of those points the hardware all looks solid, Oxygen OS looks more mature than ever and we’re sure the build quality is going to be up to scratch but is that enough for you to buy one?

    Garbage?!?! How so?
    They are extremely convenient for storing a lot of stuff.
    What are the downsides?
    I tend to take a lot of photos – they initially get saved to internal storage as default, then every month or so, I move them to the SD card.
    I also keep high def media for the kids to watch and music for myself on the microSD – I find it very easy to pop it in/out of the phone to shove in the front of my laptop to make changes/move things/back it up etc (way better than connecting the phone via USB or using a file explorer like EX over the wifi).
    I can (and regularly do) switch it into my galaxy tab S2 or my MS surface etc – it makes the media much more portable.
    I have found no downsides so far. Phone internal storage only needs to be fast for applications and initial save of high resolution photo/video – microSD is a cheap, convenient and effective way to store and access large quantities of that media.

It cost around the same of s8, more than g6 and p10, and even s7 is a better deal right now. This considering all of the aboves have official warranty in the country. What’s the point in pushing the “flagship killer” nametag when the price is same of even higher than other flagships? They almost doubled the price in mere 4 years, not even the luxury industry has ever done something like that! And, not to mention: I’m in EU, I got just the same services a chinese has about warranty and everything else. Why do I have to pay 100€ more than a chinese person? You think I’m just stupid or something?

    In here S8 is about 860 euros compared to 500 euros for OP5, not to mention we are getting 2 year warranty for the OP5 just as for anything else from the flagships. So…yeah.

        Sure get it then, to each his own. But if i’m getting a flagship ultra expensive models i go for the non-gray area resellers with not questionable warranty and origin of the device.

        Yeah, I was looking into it. apparent it was offered by 1 or 2 resellers. and did you look into the comments? the boxes were unsealed. Some buyers even complaint that it was a used, recon set cause 1 of the buyer unit has the content of the previous user still in the phone. The normal price on Amazon for new, sealed with samsung pay working and all is still above 700eu

No 2K screen.
Still a 5″5.
Boring design, copy/paste from multiple other devices.
Thick bezels.
Camera(s) badly positioned.
Still USB 2.0.
Nothing amazing compared to 3/3T
Too much buzz and marketing BS.
Too expensive.
TL;DR
Not impressed.
No buy.

  People should really start educating themselves on tech usability instead of just looking at specsheet as it is… 2k is pointless on a phone display. Unless your phone is the size of your TV, you won’t be able to see it or unless you plan to use a magnifying glass while you look at your display. The only thing that you will get from a QHD is faster drain and bigger hole in your wallet. As it is now, there is no better tech for smartphone displays then what OP is already using. QHD is just a gimmick for displays on smartphones.

      The question is, how often do you actually use VR? and the VR contents availability is still rather bad.

    QHD on my Nexus 6 is not a problem: no battery drain and no need of a magnifying glass. Speaking of battery drain, I advise you to check your assertion: there are quite a number of YouTube videos comparing FHD vs QHD mode (on a S8) and the difference in consumption is less than 10% with heavy use (big SOT).

      Are you sure the S8 display settings is on QHD? (Not Youtube video settings) cause by default even the S8 (being a QHD) has it’s display on FHD settings. If you change it, it’ll say something like not being recommended, battery consumption will be bad. haha. and the videos side by side on the same phone with a FHD and QHD settings, did you see the differences in quality? I doubt so. I’ve tested it, so you know.

    Wrong. Screen is what you see first looking on the phone. Even without VR in today’s standards FHD should go to a max of 5″ screen. For 5.5 should be at least QHD. For phablets with 6″ or higher should be 4K. Compare the screens next to each other the difference is visible. Also they use an old screen, is AMOLED but pen-tile which reduces the sharpness even more. OK for a midrange phone in $200 range but not for a so called flagship. I agree that there are differences in perception between different persons some are much less bothered than others, is the same with computer monitors and with TV, some really can not see a difference. Also the “battery” drain on modern screens and SoCs is urban legend. There is an extremely low difference. But there is a hit in benchmarks scores is true, more pixels to move around. 1+ is one of those obsessed with scores, but the main reason is the price. They’ve got a deal on obsolete screens (is the same as on previous model) so chep screens which Samsung is not going to use on their devices. All the other explanations are BS, don’t believe it. Use a good hi res screen and let the user set the resolution lower to FHD if they want.

      I have no argument on “Screen is what you see first looking on the phone”. Complete agree. But I can guarantee you that you can’t tell the difference between an S8 on a FHD settings and one on a QHD. If you put two displays of a different tech, maybe but that’s the quality of the displays that are showing the difference. Unless VR is widely used, I don’t see the necessity of 2k on smartphones, for now.

  Pretty much my feelings exactly! I can’t believe they can cock up this much given the time and resources they now have to develop a quality upgrade…
  This feels like the OP2 disappointment a little to me, so by that logic the OP6 will actually be a worthy upgrade from my OP3 for example or a 3T.
  Problem is, they’ve probably lost a lot of confidence by now in their original user base that they’ve all gone elsewhere or ready to jump on the next ‘Flagship Killer’ upstart… I know I am!

  Perfectly agree. Even more SD835 supports USB 3.0 in hardware so they just save pennies on some other external component or they were not able to implemented well (USB 3.0 higher speed require better testing and even may be more prone to problems with even slight PCB routing who knows).
  Also ArsTechnica review shows a very bad camera at least on low(er) light. Horrible focussing, strange processing, big details lost. All photos are worst than on OP3. There is no mention what sensors they use, again bragging and marketing about resolution of cameras. They show photos in day light. OK, my 10 years old compact camera make good photos on a sunny day, who cares.
  Screen is obsolete (same as on previous model) Pentile FHD on a 5.5. No SD card, Don’t expect to many updates or fixes looking on past experience.
  OP it’s only buzz and marketing with nothing to offer, they had a good start but now they lost it.

    It’s either you never owned a OP or just ignorant. I’ve owned all the OP models but OP2. They have one of the fastest/frequent or not, the most fastest/frequent updates out there, next to Xiaomi and the Google line (Not talking about about version updates but they are not slow on that too) What’s the point of even bringing it up a 10 year old compact camera? You’re comparing a smartphone camera with much smaller sensors compared to a compact camera, regardless if it was from 10 years ago with much bigger sensors. Not the smartest.. In case if you have missed, They showed plenty of night shots too (Not the greatest but not exactly the worst) Screen is not obsolete. OP3T has one of the best looking displays out there (It’s no S8 but It’s a good looking display).

Prices for smartphone are out of hand, no phone is worth more than $150.00 Dollars. Consumers need to stop feeding these ripoff manufacturer by buy the newest phone out like the nuts do for the iphone.

  I have to disagree on this. Smartphone tech revolutionizes every year. Compared to what it once was, now we can do a lot with smartphones and that will only grow. It’s like an extension of us now. It guides us, pays the bill and we shop with it, we get information from it, It’s also our main camera and many many more.

    I’m not saying I agree with him about the “150$ thing”, but smartphone are IMPROVED every year, there hasn’t been a single revolution since they were born… and yeah, we use smartphones a lot, but every single thing you mentioned is done by both flagship and entry level phones… just wanted to point that out

      Sorry, I meant to say evolutionizes. I wouldn’t say just an improvement tho. I mean if you talking about TFT to Amoled, yes, I’d called that improvement. But the introduction of NFC and down to daily applications for a phone from then to now, There’s a huge difference. I don’t how I was able to find my way driving then but now I literally need GPS on my smartphone. haha

I was one of the early adopter of the one plus one. It was a groundbreaking device, no question about that, but oneplus now has veered off its original motto of “no settle” and “flagship killer”. Oneplus 5 is kind of becoming a flagship that it was mocking in the beginning! Such irony! From 300 Euro + shipping of the OPO to 500 Euro for the 5 now is just ridiculous. And now, after 4 year, they still play the small player card! I won’t accept that. Look at xiaomi, their mi 1 started at 1999rmb, now the mi 6 started 24999. That’s what I call acceptable. I was one of the early defender for oneplus invite system, guess that I won’t or more exactly can’t afford to be their supporter anymore. Really disappointed…

  I totally agree with you, I too was an early adopter, loved the OnePlus One, so much so that I managed to get a further 5 friends and family to get in on it…
  I skipped the OnePlus 2 because of the lack of NFC mainly and the SD810 was getting a tonne of bad press at the time.
  I then made the jump from the One to the 3 at the launch and I’m happily still using the 3. It did piss me off a bit when the 3t came out shortly after but given that I managed to get my 3 for £309 I’m still very happy as the OnePlus One was originally £269 so not a huge difference. Now look where we are… The OP5 price is absolutely ridiculous when you consider what OnePlus was all about when it started…
  It’s ok though, they’re now making way for another ‘upstart’ company to step in and throw a great phone together for a reasonable price just as they once did… It’ll happen and we can start the loop all over again haha! Exciting times ahead!
  (Just to clarify, I’m done with OnePlus after the launch of the 5 by the way…)

I search the functions what I think is best for me..good gps (glonass,beidou,gps)
4G band 20, battery, price, good camera
I dont need the most exspensive or fastest phone
but if I can do everything with my redmi note 4 of 150€ or I can do the same or less more (if I still can or have to use it the extra functions) for triple or quad price….
than I made the right chose for me.
I’m not the guy that need the best and the most hype or price..
also when I mention good camera (i didn’t say best) … I know there are better…but not only one plus 5 has the best or better camera.
sending a pic with whatsapp or facebook,… to view with another smarthphone…I never think of: hope they see that this is a 20mpx picture on their smarthphone that is supper clear and sharp…..and I also dont think that when I receive a message pic on my smartphone.
Good to know there are better….. but everyone has to decide what is it worth for him.
