The MediaTek chipsets always had fame due to the good overall performance and low price ratio. However, they’ve always been one step behind its main competitor, Qualcomm, in one aspect: the updates life spare.
While Snapdragons SoCs, thanks to its open-source policy, have a range of custom development and updates to major Android versions, the chipsets made by the Taiwanese manufacturer suffer from the bad support, thanks to the lack of openness.
But this seems to be gradually changing with some of MediaTek clients noticing that updates are important by sharing full source for its handsets. And more importantly with the developers of M.A.D Team – Mediatek Android Developers – bravely taking the responsibility to themselves to bring new Android flavors to smartphones that never dreamed to taste.
As result, the group has just released Android 8.0 Oreo in the form of their own MadOS to two supported devices. The Jiayu S3 and the Oukitel K6000 Plus.
The Jiayu S3 was an excellent phone released back in early 2015 by the long goner Jiayu. Despite the company’s bankruptcy in the same year, the phone sold pretty well winning some fans around the globe in the process. The Jiayu S3 is a phone with 5.5-inch FHD Corning Gorila Glass 3 panel, powered by the 1.7Ghz octa-core MT6752 paired with 3GB of RAM. The device has a 3,000mAh battery ensuring long endurance, lastly worth nothing to mention that the phone also counts with NFC in the Advanced version, something that we never saw again in a device of this range.
Gizchina News of the week
S3 lived longer than expected thanks to MAD Team support, that counting with Oreo, brought 4 majors Android OS updates to the handset. To the amazement of some, I still have one laying down at my desk right now. And I can say that the newest update brought some fresh air to this old but good Chinese phone.
The Oukitel K6000 Plus in counterpart isn’t an old handset, but being a MAD’s supported device can build its own legacy. The K6000 Plus was released a couple of months behind horsened by the 1.5Ghz Octa-core MT6750T paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of Storage.
The 5.5-inch FHD smartphone packs a stellar 6,080mAh battery and now with the newest battery arrangements made in Oreo, will make this a challenge for energy-demanding users.
Currently, the software still is under development and some bugs may appear, specially in the case of Jiayu S3 a 3-year-old device. However, the group is working to fix the remaining issues fully adapting the newest software to the hardware package.
You can grab the updates for both Jiayu S3 and Oukitel K6000 Plus by visiting MAD page on the facebook. Lastly, but not least, there are other handsets in the group portfolio that may receive the Oreo cookie soon, i.e. Vernee Apollo Lite, Uhans H5000, Oukitel U13 and Coolpad Note 3.
The developers also states that are open to hear companies interested in getting their support. A partnership that could benefit both companies and consumers. What you think? Do you consider software updates a decisive factor when ordering a phone? Let us know in the comments section below.
