There have been growing speculations with regards to the facial recognition feature on the Galaxy S9. Now, reports suggest that the South Korean manufacturing giant has ordered a significant amount of 3D components that will be used for the 3D sensor-equipped front camera. This system will be more sophisticated than the one on the Galaxy S8. Although Samsung aims for 3D hardware, reports out of Korea suggests that the company will still hold on to 2D software for facial recognition probably because it wants to retain iris recognition which is believed to be safer. This 3D camera will be quite useful and its application might even extend to augmented and virtual reality experiences as well as animated emojis.
