The upcoming Vernee Active model will be the first time the chinese brand is dipping their toes in the sea of rugged phones. And because they want to be unique at every cost they have designed the phone not in the usual “rugged” rubber tanky way. It looks more or less like a conventional flagship smartphone and will be the first rugged device with a 3D curve design.
Design is pretty important to Vernee and the 5,5-inch screen with the 3D curve glass is playing a big role in that. Putting 3D glass on a rugged phone is a pretty bold move, because it needs to be very carefully designed and crafted so it can withstand the abuse and rough treatment expected for this line of phones.
Gizchina News of the week
But Vernee are pretty confident they managed to create really a great looking device with all the necessary rugged elements too, so no cutting corners there. The Active is sporting the IP68 certification so it can stay under water in 1.5m depth for 30 minutes and features 99 % dustproof protection.
The back case is also using Kevlar material with military level standard so it’s very sturdy, shockproof and resistant to scratches. So the Vernee Active is really aspiring to be the full package, which you won’t be afraid to use as a go-to phone for all the usage, bussiness, personal or even outdoor. So do you think Vernee Active will be the best looking phone in the market ?
How about it’s price? There are some sellers over aliexpress that are asking more than US$300 for it. It’s absurd. I would never spend more than US$200 on a mediatek smartphone from some small brand.
I think probably GearBest will have the best price check their site.
But it got some features that cost money of course.
1: Its IP68 certified. Also some kind of Mil certification for drops and climate.
2: Got NFC support. Many Chinese brands in this category only got Bluetooth.
3: Global frequencies. Will be Vernees first device that will work with US 4G/LTE bands.
4: Not many phones got 128 GB ROM+6GB RAM.
I think this can be a affordable alternative instead of Samsung Galaxy S8 Active.
So even with a $300 price tag I think it would be fine.
I’ve checked there and it’s almost the same price (US$329).
I think the main issue of investing this amount of money on a phone like this and others similars (US$200+ from small brands), is the almost certain lack of updates and support.
For instance, if you pay US$189 for an Umidigi S2, which will be stuck forever on Android 6, it’s ok. But investing US$289 on an Elephone S8, that’s non sense. Besides the probable lack of updates and support, if, for example, you shatter it’s screen, a replacement part can’t be found even at aliexpress. I mean, you can’t even fix it by yourself! That’s different even with Xiaomi’s cheapest phones.
I don’t think it’s right to spend that amout of money on a phone that I know it’s disposable. On a phone that is likely to have a problem that I will not be able to fix (Hardware or software).
Recently I’ve bouth a Chuwi lapbook and after a fall its screen stopped working. There is noone selling a replacement screen anywhere, and after a lot of slow talking with Chuwi support, they offered me a replacement part for US$85, but I’ve payed 189 for the whole laptop! Result, I’ll not fix it and use my lapbook as a desktop.
That’s the problem of spending much money with new and small brands.
They have other cheaper options if you not need a IP classified phone. Vernee Mix 2 is one new model at a very good price also with MediaTek P25.
Vernee often got some campaigns/discount on new phones. So I will not be suprised if they have that one Active to. So my bet are that the listed retail price will drop when it will be released.
So I would wait for that before a buy.
Already a slight price drop listed for US$299.99 in the online site TomTop.
That’s nice! But I think I’ll go for a Huawei Honor 7x. It’s a beautiful and impressive smartphone for 220 bucks! Now I wonder, who will buy a Umidigi S2 Pro, for instance, for about US$300, when you can spend much less on a much more reliable phone, like I’m doing?

(The retail price for that are $850 in US)

I wonder when Vernee produces their own signature phone. In terms of
rugged phone, I supports NOMU as always for its truly excellent rugged
phones.
Not bad in terms of the hardware configuration, but I’m not exactly sure
about this phone for its professionalism, as this is the first rugged
phone Vernee made. I think I would prefer to use T18 from NOMU, after
all it produces rugged phone for a long time.
