Jailbreaking iPhones still is a big deal for some even though interest in it is not as strong as in early years. Speaking of which, some researchers from Alibaba have claimed they’ve successfully jailbroken iOS 11.2.1. In other words, which is to say the iPhone X latest version. The jailbreak is fully untethered and supports Cydia as well.
Even though the iPhone X jailbreak is doable, Alibaba’s Pandora Labs, the team behind the finding have not yet released the how-to of the process. It “takes advantage of a memory buffer overflow bug to incite a kernel panic”, according to 9to5Mac. The team has revealed in a blog post that the finding is meant for security research purposes.
Gizchina News of the week
“Although iOS 11.2 fixes some security issues, we confirmed the new iOS will still be jailbroken on the first day it was released. Although we escaped iOS 11.2 quickly, we were limited to security research purposes, our team won’t provide any jailbreak tool.”
This finding comes after a kernel vulnerability was found in iOS 11.1.2 that made the first iOS 11 jailbreak possible. Alibaba’s research, however, works on the latest version of iOS.
It remains to be seen how interested users would be in this kind of jailbreak for the iPhone X. But no doubt there’s a community that would love to try this out. We’ll leave a link to the blog post of the research in the source below. In the meanwhile, you could let us know some specific use cases where such jailbreaks can come in handy.
