Chinese manufacturing giant, Meizu, announced today that it shipped almost 20 million smartphones this year. However, this performance is slightly lower than its last year performance as it shipped about 22 million units. Meizu also stated that it got over 20 billion Yuan in revenue this year. In terms of sales, Meizu mid-rangers like Meizu M6 Note generated more funds compared to flagship Meizu Pro 7. Nevertheless, this shipment digit is nowhere near decent considering the fact that the likes of Xiaomi shipped 27.6 million smartphone units in Q3 2017 alone. This shows that Meizu has a lot of work to do if it hopes to be on par with the major players in the smartphone industry.
Gizchina News of the week
Xiaomi and Huawei released multiple flagships this year but Meizu managed to unveil only the Meizu Pro 7. This is one aspect that the company really need to work on to improve its revenue. There is currently a very high acceptance of flagship devices and more people are willing to part with huge cash for a high-performance smartphone thus Meizu will be at the losing end if it continues to focus on budget smartphones.
It doesn’t seem so long ago that there would be constant complaints in the posts here about yet another Meizu release. The M6 Note was really a long overdue return to form for Meizu, as their budget range had failed to compete with Xiaomi effectively since the M2 Note. A move away from an over-reliance on MediaTek could be on the cards, too, and I think that alone could be a big positive for them. Though the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus in all their variants relied upon MediaTek chips, they weren’t marred by the poor performance that the Pro 6 and Pro 6S suffered from. The dual camera implementation, whilst not flawless, performs pretty damn well. It was also their first attempt, and they did something interesting with it and the second screen. There’s a lot of ground to make up, for sure, but Meizu still have plenty of potential. Looking forward to their upcoming releases.
There best bet was to stick with Exynos but they screwed that up by using garbage MTK.
