MediaTek Helio P40 and Helio P70 details leaks online

This year for sure wasn’t the best for MediaTek, the low sales of its flagship SoC Helio X30, only present in the Meizu Pro 7 Plus and Meitu V6, made the company scrap their plans for an Helio X chipset in 2018. Additionally, according to a Counterpoint research, the Taiwanese Chip maker saw its 2016’s 18% market share decline to 14% in Q3 2017.

In order to recover its market share by selling more chipsets, the company decided to put their focus totally in the mid-range segment where the Helio P series acts. According to a leak, the company is working in two chipsets, named as the Helio P40 and Helio P70. The pair of SoCs built at 12nm by TSMC are expected to arrive in Q2 2018, mixing the best of the High-end segment with the mid-range grade.

Helio P40:

The Helio P40 isn’t a new guy for us since it already made early apparitions through 2017, but the news is the details being delivered by this new leak. The chipset will be an Octa-Core consisting of Four 2.0Ghz A73 cores and Four A53 2.0Ghz A53 cores, the graphical power will be ensured by a Mali-G72 MP3 clocked at 700MHz. The P40 will also bring the support of up to 32MP cameras. Additionally, the Chipset will support up to 8GB of RAM LPDDR4x up to 1866Mhz, eMMC 5.1 and UFS 2.1.

The Helio P40 will also confirm what is believed to be a new trend in 2018. The chipset will support AI functionality with Tensor Flow support. Lastly but not least the chipset brings LTE cat.7 support.

Helio P70:

While the P40 is worth of our attention, the one stealing the show for sure will be the Helio P70. This chipset probably will come to rival the likes of Snapdragon 660, coming with Four 2.5GHz A73 cores and Four 2.0Ghz A53 cores. The main difference rests P70’s GPU, this chipset will deliver more advanced graphics due to the presence of a quad-core Mali-G72 GPU clocked at 800Mhz.

The Helio P70 will support up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, brings the same eMMC 5.1 and UFC 2.1 storage of its smaller brother. The Helio P70 should be fitted in more advanced smartphones, as its performance could be equal to previous models from Helio X series.

According to reports, these chipsets will be sported by Xiaomi full-screens Redmis in the next year and also in some smartphones in Vivo, Oppo, and Gionee. As well as the other smaller Chinese brands that always sport the chipsets made by MediaTek.

Due to MediaTek’s importance and Meizu’s main investors, we expect the latter to sport these chipsets in their next smartphones. However, this remains to be confirmed as reports appeared a few weeks ago pointing that the Chinese smartphone maker could be in touch with Qualcomm to sport its Snapdragon series on their next smartphones.

Probably their use has dropped this year because they are so hard work with releasing kernels, which means handsets with their chips miss out on os updates

I used to like MediaTek but got tired of waiting for their X30. Additionally their X20 found in my Redmi Note 4 is seriously lacking in support, it’s still on Android 6 with no real hopes of getting anything above.
In the nice Xiaomi and Mediatek tradition the kernel sources for it are also missing so no thanks… Got a Snapdragon 820 Leeco X820 for $200 and it will do , there is already unofficial Oreo for that one.

  im looking at doing the same thing as yourself… ill give it a month or two to see what information or presale comes out, then look at a $200 leeco snapdragon.
  I’m wanting to know if any of the upcoming phone chips will support L1/L5 gps functionality.

  All they need is to price it right since SD has the 670 in store. I surely hope for mediatek’s sake their P70 outperforms or is at per with the SD 670 otherwise it might be another troubling year for them

    The SD 670 will be buit on 10 nm process, people will notice that, plus better GPU, better ISP camera.

    They made a big booboo with the X30. They aren’t about to do that again. As for outperforming the SD670 don’t hold your breath. It will be great for throwing int sub $300 phones though, somewhere the SD670 is unlikely to show up.

      MTK became popular in the 2015-16 cycle because QC chips from that year sucked. Once QC gets it right MTK doesn’t have a chance.

        It’s far too easy to cost less than Qualcomm. MTKs mistake was trying to charge as high as Qualcomm for the X30

This is what the X20/X30 should have been. I always wondered why mediatek didn’t use 4 A72/A73 and chose two! Huawei did magic with that combination. I can’t wait to see how these things perform!
