Just as we are expecting the LG G7, fresh reports from out of LG’s home country suggests there may not be an “LG G7” smartphone. A section of the South Korea media privy to information about the company is quoted to have reported that LG may have concluded plans to rebrand its flagship G-series so they can compete well against the giants like Samsung, Huawei, HTC and other top brands.
If this report turns out to be true, then LG would be ditching the G-series of smartphones that is traceable back to 2012 when it first announced the LG Optimus G, and as such the long-rumored LG G7 flagship which is expected to debut soon will instead be the first phone to carry the new brand name.
Gizchina News of the week
While we are not sure what naming convention LG will be adopting, the report has it that the Company is weighing a “two-digit number” rather than reverting back to anything with the number one in the title so as to avoid the preconception that a single digit number could indicate an outdated phone in relation to flagships like the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X.
An LG official is reported having confirmed to our source that LG is preparing a new brand strategy for the G series in the first half of the year. Numbering the phone with a two-digit number and rebranding the phone with a new name are some of the options on the table.
We would have to wait a few more weeks/ days when the LG G6 successor would be made official to be sure of whatever naming convention the company may adopt, before then please do let us know what you think of LG’s decision.
