It is no secret that Samsung has been working on a smartphone with a flexible display for years and through trademark applications combined with rumors the device has been named Galaxy X. Nobody knows for sure what the device will be called, but for years we have seen patents passing by with sketches of prototypes and ways in which the flexible display can be made. As of now, we are yet to see a flexible screen that is also sensitive to pressure. However, a recent patent application from Samsung Display shows a smartphone with a flexible screen that will be equipped with a pressure-sensitive display.
About six months ago, Samsung Display applied for a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and in the patent, a new technology is described on how a pressure-sensitive sensor can be processed in a flexible display. Several sensors are placed beneath the bendable screen which are used to determine the bending of the screen. On the basis of this information, a sensor controller can determine the intensity of a pressure on the screen. See sketches of the patent below
Gizchina News of the week
Although the patent application clearly describes how the technology can be used in a flexible screen, in practice it is not so easy to introduce this in a smartphone. This is evident from the fact that we have been waiting for years for the first smartphone with a flexible display. The head of the Samsung smartphones division, Koh Dong-jin, announced last year that the introduction of the folding smartphone is near. Well, some obstacles still need eliminations before this device can go into mass production. For now, NOTHING is certain, there is no specific time for the perfection of the Galaxy X neither is it certain that it will be called Galaxy X. It is also not confirmed that this smartphone will be equipped with a pressure-sensitive and flexible screen as the patent describes.
