LG Will Supply 6.5-inch OLED Screens for iPhone X Plus

The Cupertino-based Apple is the second smartphone maker in the world after the South Korean Samsung. According to the latest data, Samsung takes 22.3% of the market, Apple does 12.5%, and Huawei has occupied 10.5% of the global smartphone market in the Q3, 2017. Thus Apple yields its closest rival almost twice. Many think this is related to the fact Samsung makes its own components, while Apple has to buy them from other suppliers including Samsung. If this is the biggest reason why Apple falls behind Samsung, there is every chance Huawei will surpass it soon, as the Chinese tech giant is developing its own chips and software. But Apple understands this better than we. That’s why it has been looking for new suppliers of OLED screens for its upcoming flagship, the iPhone X Plus. According to some Taiwanese sources, the iPhone maker has already signed a contract with LG. The latter should provide OLED screens at 6.5 inches. That’s why we are thinking Apple and LG have signed a contract for the iPhone X Plus screens.

The source reveals LG will supply over 15 million OLED screens with a diagonal size of 6.5 inches. This simply means the Korean manufacturer has become the second screen supplier for Apple after another South Korean company, Samsung. We knew a few companies including LG and Sharp have been fighting to become the next screen supplier for Apple. So it turns out LG has won the race.

The regular variants of Apple smartphones in face of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are using traditional LCD screens. This is one of the reasons why their pricing differs from the iPhone X radically. But this may change in the nearest future because the same source claims Sharp and JDI are trying to become the third supplier for Apple in terms of OLED display.

So if these rumors are true and the iPhone X Plus launches this year, most likely it will have an identical body size to the iPhone 8 Plus. But due to a higher aspect ratio, the screen will occupy more space on the front panel. Therefore, it will provide a better experience. If this works, Apple may solve the OLED screen shortage problem, and make a tough competition to Samsung.
