Chinese manufacturing giant, Meizu, is one of the strongest allies of chip maker, MediaTek. Processors from the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company are not entirely flagship chipsets and even its best SoC has not really put up a fight with the likes of Snapdragon and Exynos chipsets. Rumors emanated that Meizu, a long time associate of MediaTek is set to dump the chip maker. The main reason behind this speculation is because Meizu recently launched the mid-range Meizu M6S using a Samsung Exynos 7872 chip as opposed to a MediaTek chip. However, the senior Vice-President of Meizu, Jeffery Yang, took to his official Weibo handle to clarify the air on this issue. He stated that Meizu is still in business with MediaTek and the company’s choice of processor for a particular device depends on the need and popularity of the chipset.
Gizchina News of the week
MediaTek has failed to live up to expectation when it comes to the production of flagship chipsets. It appears the company is quite comfortable with its current status and has relegated itself to the production of chips for low-end devices or perhaps mid-range smartphones while the likes of Qualcomm and Samsung strives to make chips for flagship devices. Most manufacturing companies release more low-end and mid-range smartphones than flagships annually and the likes of Huawei has said that it will concentrate on budget devices this year. Thus MediaTek may be seeing some business with its low-end chips.
