When Apple launched the iPhone X, it came up with a very polarising full-screen design. It featured a bezel cut-out on the top eliminating it from all other edges. Since then, an army of Android clones have appeared featuring what we now call the notch. But it seems that Apple has already had it.
According to a new report from a South Korean publication, the 2019 iPhone will not feature a notch. The report from Electronic Times does not go into the details but it claims that Apple is ultimately looking at a true full-screen design as a goal. But this does not necessarily mean the end of Face ID. We’re optimistic, however, that Apple could integrate an in-display fingerprint reader as it works so well. Also, it would help Apple in getting that full-screen design. Although, there will still be a question of the other sensors like the earpiece and the selfie shooter.
Gizchina News of the week
As it is, even 2018 iPhones haven’t launched yet. So, it’s about a year and a half to go before we see the actual 2019 iPhone. However, leaks will start to surface much more early and we’ll get to know what’s brewing in Apple HQ. For now, 2018 will still see up to three new iPhone models all coming with notches.
In the meanwhile, Google just announced Android P complete with support for notches. With so many Android manufacturers blindly following Apple’s lead, Google probably had no choice. But one thing is clear. The notch is not the goal. It is just a means to an end. The sooner Android manufacturers realise this, the better.
