The competition in the Chinese smartphone market is so stiff that the likes of LG have been forced to pull out of the market. Ironically, it is the largest smartphone market in the world so any manufacturer who hopes to be a global force needs a good piece of the Chinese smartphone market. Chinese brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have a piece of this market and their growth means a decline for bigger companies like Apple and Samsung. Now, it appears that Samsung is trying to reclaim lost grounds in the Chinese market using the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus smartphones. The company held a launching ceremony for these devices in Guangzhou on Tuesday where Koh Dong-jin, Samsung’s head of smartphones tried to promote the smartphones.
During the launch event which was exclusive to Chinese partners and the media, Mr. Koh said
Gizchina News of the week
“Samsung will try to provide new value for Chinese consumers and economy while continuing to invest in technological innovation,”
Samsung has taken some steps in the Chinese market to boost its income. Late last year, it cut down its local sales entities to 23 because of slow sales. In addition, it also replaced the head position of its China branch. At an MWC press conference, Mr. Koh said
“China is a very difficult market and we are always being careful,”…“I will give more authority and time to the new leaders of our China branch to recover the business.”
Last year, Samsung was placed at sixth position behind Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Apple. Nevertheless, do you think that the Galaxy S9/S9+ can claim some grounds for Samsung in China? These smartphones have been criticized for its lack of innovation and it is only an inch above the pre-existing Galaxy S8 series. Let us know your thoughts in the comment below.
