It wasn’t just Rose who lost her Jack. With the ever increasing screen sizes and decreasing thickness of smartphones, the 3.5mm jack is the first thing that is let go. With brands like Apple, HTC and now, even Sony doing so, the 3.5mm jack will probably be obsolete in the next two years.
Till last year, Sony kept the 3.5mm jack in their smartphones, but this year Sony decide to lose jack in the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact smartphones. As to why this move was made, Sony stated,
“This is part of the shift to our new Ambient Flow design language. In order to create the beautiful seamless design, our designers needed to remove the headphone jack. Plus, we’re aware of the major market trend toward wireless headphones over wired headphones.”
That’s great Sony! You’re trying to bring about changes in your smartphone design according to the current trends. But wait, is that what is really happening? Sony’s latest flagships have nothing stellar to boast about, in terms of design and why losing the 3.5mm jack helped the design. The XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are some of the thickest phones of this year till date. There is no trace of a bigger battery that might have been accommodated in that thick body. And honestly speaking, the Sony flagships of 2018 aren’t really great to look at.

Sony also went ahead and added a Y splitter in case you want to charge your phone and listen to music via wired earphones. The funny part, the splitter drops the charge rate to 5V/0.5A. Even funnier is the fact that Sony is shipping a pair of wired earphones in the box depending upon the region! What’s up Sony?
