The OPPO R15 will be out soon. And though we have known much about the upcoming flagship of OPPO, today the manufacturer revealed some important information concerning its camera. It turns out this is the world’s first smartphone to use Sony’s latest flagship image sensor of IMX519.
Previously, we have heard the OPPO R15 will be packed with a rear-mounted dual-camera using 16+5MP sensors combination, while the front-facing camera will use a 20MP lens. So now we can state the large lens on the back will carry the model name of the Sony IMX519. Let’s figure out what a sensor we are talking about.
The image sensor (CMOS) is the core imaging component of phone cameras. That’s why it’s very important for any handset to come with a large sensor. The size of CMOS is actually the size of the photosensitive device. So for the same pixel, the larger the sensor is, the larger the area of a single pixel is. Therefore, it will be able to receive better optical signals, capture more photons, and provide a better signal-to-noise ratio and image quality. On the other hand, the size of a sensor is also proportional to its design and production cost. And though the larger – the better, also the larger – the more expensive.
Gizchina News of the week
As for the OPPO R15, it is confirmed to use a better and larger CMOS. So theoretically it should provide a better shooting performance in comparison to the previous generation cameras. According to the official source, the IMX519 sensor is way better than the larger IMX398 and has two advantages:
The sampling frame rate is improved by 100% in comparison to the previous generation. The photographing is faster and the capture is more accurate.
It comes with a 1.22μm large pixel area and 1/2.6-inch sensor size. Thus the unit pixel area is increased by 18.7%, while the sensor size is improved by 7.7%. So the night shooting is better with less noise.
