Tomorrow, on March 27 at 2 PM, the first flagship phone of Xiaomi in 2018 will be announced. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S has been the latest buzzword in the smartphones market. Not in vain. The Mi MIX 2S is going to be a real premium smartphone with many selling points. Yesterday, on March 25, Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun made a warm-up and was talking about the Snapdragon 845 SoC that is put into the phone. This is going to be the most important selling point of the device. According to him, though the Snapdragon 845 is a very powerful chip, it has a big disadvantage – it’s too expensive.
He disclosed that when the Snapdragon 845 enters the Chinese market, it gets a 17% of an import value-added tax. Thus it costs 500 yuan ($80). This is three times more than the Snapdragon 660. Say, if the Xiaomi Mi Note 3 6+64GB variant (priced at 2099 yuan ($334)) gets a Snapdragon 845, it will cost around 2500 yuan ($398). Moreover, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S will come with a full-screen, greatly enhanced camera (a new CMOS), UFS 2.1 storage, and other options. So the final price should be around 3000 yuan ($477). As a reminder, the previous-gen model was priced at 3299 yuan ($525).
Gizchina News of the week
That’s not a secret, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S is going to struggle against all top branded flagships including the Samsung Galaxy S9. Recently, Tech Insights came in with the Samsung Galaxy S9+’s components cost table. According to it, the most expensive parts are the SoC (CPU + baseband), screen, camera, and memory. So if compared to Lei Jun’s words, we can say the Mi MIX 2S’ processor really costs too much. Moreover, we know the Mi MIX 2S will sport an 8GB of RAM, 256GB of ROM, dual-camera supporting AI, and wireless charging. Therefore, if this handset continues the same price policy as its predecessor, it will be the best offer in the market.
Their is absolutely no way that a production of the S845 costs more than approximately 2x the S660 as after all GPU is 2x and shy above it in size & A75 core’s are at most 35~40% bigger (would be up to 50% if Qualcomm had gone with 2x L2 cache size as ARM referred for A75) I don’t know how big the DinamIQ cluster is nor did QC used L3 in which configuration or how not is & how much the new QDSP bigger but for the sake of argument the S845 is a 2x or a bit more the size of the S660 & process cost is the same even it’s never literation. So either; Lei got a bad deal from Qualcomm & it’s not best with math, Qualcomm got even more greedy which if it’s the case will again be punished in China & more than they ever could profit, or it’s something else (which is highly unlikely). Anyway it’s not worth 3x the price of S660 & it will never be. It’s worth 10~15% premium over the S835.
Probably the greedyness of qualcomm is the fault.
No I think Lei Jun is just lying us as Xiaomi begins to charge us more & more premium. Tho from making almost nothing on hardware two, three years back to earning a lot last year and expecting to earn much more thins year. Bare bone almost nothing isn’t all right but ripping off the costumer skin is worse. We sean this kind of a thing before in the past just remember Huawei on it’s path to glory.
Qualcomm already got burned in China for it’s uncompetitive practice so I doubt they want more.
At the end it doesn’t matter as what ever & who ever is behind it it simply won’t pass as people won’t bite it & they will declare product(s) unsuccessful and slash the price’s down a lot. Just remember for how much Xiaomi wanted to sell the Mi Note 3 in the start & with today mentioned S660? It whose unacceptable for anyone sane plus a big let down for Mi Note fan’s as it whose almost in every aspect a downgrade of Mi Note 2 but with higher price. Now it can be bought for almost half that price & yes it whose totally unsuccessful product on which Xiaomi actually lost money.
Edit: It seams the S845 indeed is 30% bigger than the S835 which makes it close to 3x more pricy than a S660. Actually S845 is very disappointing design to me as it waists so much silicone on sloppy not needed things as L4 shared cache instead of capitalising it more on GPU & DSP.
So Lei Jun didn’t lie but he still could have gotten a better price.
Well it appears that they were able to charge the same price. The comments have been filled with people getting their knickers in a real twist over this phone and the level of expectation has just been a bit silly it’s a 2s not a 3
Actually design turned out good at least regarding me. It’s the most usable/practical MIX up to date with best camera Xiaomi made. I dislike notch and aren’t a fun of 18:9 displays either.
you do realize i was partly referring to you in my previous comment.
