Razer Phone receives Android 8.1 Oreo stable release

The Razer Phone is probably one of the nicest surprises brought to the market in 2017. Carrying the NextBit Robin DNA on its design, the smartphones was probably one of the most original pieces of hardware among the sea of similar mobile handsets. The Razer Phone also sits in the category of gaming smartphones, carrying some of the best specs offered in the market and a gorgeous 120Hz display.

Razer promised in March that would skip the Android 8.0 Oreo release in order to update the 7.1.2 running Razer Phone directly to the Android 8.1 Oreo. After releasing a buggy developer Rom late in the last month, the company finally fulfilled its promise today with a bugless release of Android 8.1 Oreo to all eligible Razer Phones around the globe.

However, we would advise you to not hold your breath. According to the manufacturer the update is being rolled out in an incremental form, so it may take a while before the update notification arrives for everyone. Also, the company didn’t disclose any changelog for the update, apart from the features introduced by Android 8.1 – Notification Channels, Autofill API, Picture-in-Picture – we have no clue of which goodies the gaming-hardware manufacturer added to its first smartphone.

Worth noting that the Android 8.1 Oreo isn’t a groundbreaking update when you compare it directly with Android 8.0, but thankfully, it fixes most of the issues presented by the 8.0 release. Anyway, it can be a huge update, of course, when you’re coming from the 2016’s Nougat. Lastly, but not least, Razer added the latest April Security patch to the release.
