Xiaomi Mi 8 Gets The Attention Of European Global Navigation Satellite System Authority

A few days ago, Chinese manufacturing giant, Xiaomi, unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 8 and one of its major selling points is its dual-frequency GPS with super-precision positioning technology and it is the first smartphone in the world to use this technology. Xiaomi stated that the accuracy of its measurements is increased by at least 3-5 times, which is called “Road Dementia.”. Now, this practical innovation has gotten the attention of the European Global Navigation Satellite System Authority.

A few days ago, the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA) reported the news of Xiaomi Mi 8 on the official website. GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), or Chinese GNSS, refers to the transmission of signals with time and location data to a GNSS receiver on the ground in space through a series of navigation and positioning satellites. The receiver then uses these data to calculate the position. By definition, GNSS systems provide global coverage, including Galileo in Europe, GPS in the United States, GLONASS in Russia, and the Beidou satellite navigation system in China.

Xiaomi Mi 8 uses Broadcom’s revolutionary dual-frequency (E1/L1+E5/L5) GNSS chip dubbed BCM47755 which was introduced last year. Prior to the Mi 8 arrival, smartphone-based GPS is powered by single frequency GNSS receivers and its record accuracy is to a few meters. However, the Xiaomi Mi 8 takes measurements with accuracy up to a few decimetres. According to GSA, Xiaomi Mi 8 is the world’s first smartphone equipped with a dual-band GNSS, and it is also the world’s first mobile phone that can provide decimeter-level positioning and navigation accuracy.
