According to the plans of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s 5G test will be divided into two steps. The first step is from the end of 2016 to the end of 2018. It has a goal to participate in supporting the development of 5G international standards. The second step is from the end of 2018 to the end of 2020. It is a 5G product development test, the main goal of which is to carry out 5G pre-commercial testing.
At the MWC 2018 held recently, the three major Chinese carriers in face of China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, as well as many companies in the industry, have released the latest 5G deployment plans, clarifying that 5G will be officially commercialized by 2020.

China Unicom announced that it will actively create a new ecosystem of 5G industry, cooperating with many partners. It has already managed to establish a few labs such as the 5G Joint Innovation Lab with Tencent, 5G+AI Joint Lab with Baidu, 5G Technology Joint Lab with Chinese Academy of Sciences, and launched 5G Network Slicing Partner Program with Internet companies, equipment and chip manufacturers. At last, there are more than ten jointly established units of China Unicom’s 5G Industrial Internet Industry Alliance.

China Mobile, along with global partners such as Datang Telecom, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, and Nokia, jointly launched the ‘5G SA (Standalone) Sailing Action’ to promote the independent networking from standards to real commercialization and promote the final products mature as soon as possible.
China Telecom also released the ‘China Telecom 5G Technology White Paper’, which is the first time when a global operator publishes a white paper that comprehensively expounds 5G technology views and overall strategies. China Telecom will fully promote the development of 5G from the aspects of technological innovation and industrial cooperation.
The industry generally believes that China is expected to achieve 5G communication pre-commercial use in 2019, and to achieve large-scale commercial use of 5G communication in 2020.
