Despite a downward turn in its smartphones business, Sony still remains one of the best options smartphones maker resort to when it comes to image sensors for smartphones. The Japanese brand has today announced anew imaging sensor for smartphones – the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor.
Sony claims the new sensor is the world’s first 48MP smartphone sensor, and it boasts of an industry-leading pixel size of 0.8μm which is why it was able to cram 48 effective megapixels onto a 1/2-type sensor unit, this in clear terms should result in enhanced images quality from your smartphones. The new sensor has an inbuilt exposure control technology and signal processing functionality from Sony which ensures real-time output with a much better dynamic range that is four times greater than conventional units.

On top of that, the sensor comes with the Quad Bayer color filter array, where adjacent 2×2 pixels come in the same color allowing for a higher sensitivity shooting. With the new sensor, Sony is assuring users of brighter images with lower noise regardless of the lighting conditions.
Sony says the new sensor will hit the markets later in September, and while it is not yet clear what device the sensor might make its first appearance, there are speculations that it will only feature in smartphones tipped to launch later in 2019. A unit of the new sensor sill go for 3,000 yen ($27).
