We all know that Samsung is one of the biggest display manufacturers. Their OLED screens adorn the iPhone X and many other phones, not to mention their own smartphones. While the whole world was busy fortifying their display with a glass on top, Samsung decided to take a different approach: a plastic substrate, instead of glass.
Samsung has announced a screen which they claim is “unbreakable”. Meaning: Something that can never be broken. The panel is a flexible OLED with an unbreakable plastic substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it. The panel has been certified by the Underwriters Laboratories*. They subjected the panel to a wide variety of tests. For starters, the display was dropped from 1.2m (about 4 feet) 26 times and also from 1.8m with no sign of damage. It was even subjected o high and low temperatures, 71º to -32º with no sign of degradation. Good job Samsung!
Gizchina News of the week
This opens up a lot of avenues in terms of smartphone development. A fold-able phone? A wristband that is screen all over? The possibilities are endless. The catch here is the foldability of other components of a smartphone or any other device. Even if the display folds, the internal components will have to fold too. Or else we are left with a flip-phone without hinges. Now that would be disappointing. I don’t want to spend a ton of money to get a screen where my flip-phone’s hinge was! The Galaxy X or whatever Samsung’s rumoured fold-able phone is called, might sport this display. If we look at the durability factor, this panel gets a lot of points. There’s a video on the Samsung Display channel on Youtube, where the display panel is hit by a hammer multiple times and it shows no sign of damage. Check out the video down below.
