Yesterday, China Internet Society and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology jointly released the top 100 Chinese Internet companies in 2018. The list includes the likes of Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, Jingdong, NetEase, Sina, Sohu, Meituan Comments, Sanliu, and Xiaomi. The data showed that in 2017, the Internet business of the top 100 Internet companies reached 1.72 trillion Yuan (approx. 253 billion), and Internet business revenue increased by 50.6%. The total operating profit was over 270 billion Yuan (approx. 40 billion), an increase of 82.6% over the same period last year.

Eighty-three companies achieved profitability, and 11 companies got a profit margin of over 40%. The top two Alibaba and Tencent Internet business revenues accounted for more than 25% of the total revenue of the top 100 Internet businesses, and operating profit accounted for nearly 60% of the total. In 2017, the R&D investment of the top 100 Internet enterprises exceeded 100 billion Yuan (approx. $15 billion) and the average R&D intensity reached 9.6%.
