In an official press release that was released to South African media, Huawei has confirmed that the Kirin 980 will power the Mate 20 series smartphones. The Chinese company also confirmed that the Kirin 980 will be based on the 7nm process. The Kirin 980 will be unveiled at the IFA Trade Tech show in Berlin.
An excerpt from the press release read,“According to Mr Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei CBG [consumer business group – ed], Huawei will unveil the Kirin 980 at IFA, which will be the first commercially available 7nm chip in the world,” Another excerpt says, “Huawei Mate 20 will launch with the world’s first 7nm chipset this October,”.

So there you have it, the Kirin 980 will power the Mate 20 series as was reported earlier. It will be the world’s first chip based on a 7nm process. Smaller fabrication process usually implies that the chip will be more powerful and efficient. AS far as the Kirin 980 is concerned, how it stacks up against other chips in the market is yet to be decided. Qualcomm will likely unveil their next chip which might be based on the 7nm process by the end of this year. Apple, on the other hand, may unveil it soon with the next batch of iPhones.
