Qualcomm is an absolute leader in the smartphone chips market. Almost all Android smartphones are packed with its Snapdragon series of mobile platforms. Of course, Huawei is making its own Kirin line chips; Samsung packs few of its devices with Exynos SoCs, and Xiaomi has started making the Surge chips, but the Qualcomm Snapdragon is what you can find on almost all devices that stand for something. Seems, the American company wants to do the same with the smart wearables market. Though it has a few chips for this niche as well, it can’t be considered as a leader. However, today, the company announced on Twitter that it will announce a major news on September 10. The picture attached hints perhaps the statement is related to wearable device chips.
Gizchina News of the week
In Qualcomm’s Twitter post, you can clearly see the sketch of a smartwatch with the word of ‘Snapdragon wear.’ On the watch, you can see information such as the battery, step, and weather. Nothing surprising, though.
Actually, there is no information about what this will be. But this may suggest that Qualcomm will release the new wearable device chip, which will improve the power consumption, as well as the battery life, is expected to increase. The weather information displayed on the poster may also be related to the new chip supporting data network connections.
At present, Qualcomm has released the Snapdragon Wear 2100/2500 series processor, which adopts the quad-core Cortex A7 architecture, clocked at 1.2GHz, and integrates Adreno 304 GPU and X5 LTE baseband. The new chip is expected to adopt new architectures and processes, and may also support Android 9 Pie.
if it’s not based on the new 7nm process then it’s not worth the news.
