Sharp officially announced earlier today that it has completed the acquisition of Toshiba Client Solutions (hereinafter referred to as TCS) of Toshiba’s PC business. It has obtained 80.1% equity of TCS and officially adopted TCS as its subsidiary. On June 5th, Sharp announced that it will acquire TCS at a price of 4.05 billion Yen ($36 million). Toshiba also officially announced today that it has sold 80.1% of TCS to Sharp. In the future, TCS will be incorporated in Sharp, to enhance its competitiveness and corporate value, and continue its PC business.

Sharp used the Mebius brand to sell PCs, but it withdrew from the market in 2010 because of poor proceeds. Today, Sharp has announced its official return to the PC market. Toshiba sells PC products under the brand name Dynabook. In 1985, Toshiba launched the world’s first notebook computer. In the 1990s, it ranked first in the world in the notebook market. According to statistics released by IDC Japan on August 30th, the Q2 (April-June) Japanese domestic PC shipments (commercial + household) increased by 6.7% to 2.74 million units compared to the same period last year. The growth rate in Japan was much higher than the growth rate of the global market (2.3%), the US market (2.9%) and the Western European market (1.3%).
Sharp President Dai Zhengwu said that he had started negotiations with Toshiba in the first half of 2017. The consultation took a lot of time because the company had so much losses, so it was bought very cheaply. Dai Zhengwu also pointed out that in the initial stage, it will give priority to expanding domestic sales in Japan, and will also plan to increase sales in China and the United States. The new Toshiba under Sharp will copy the Sharp model and the company will work hard to make the Toshiba PC business turn in profit within two years.
