Everyone and their dog knows Qualcomm makes mobile processors – some of the best ones, by the way – but not too many people know the company is also behind the under display fingerprint scanning tech we expect to see in lots of smartphones in the near future.
As we’ve previously covered in Samsung Galaxy S10 rumors, the UD fingerprint scanners Qualcomm can produce utilize ultrasound technology, making them better than what companies like Synaptics can offer at the moment.
This newer type of UD scanner is expected to be released in handsets later this year or early 2019, most likely on Samsung devices.

The partnership between Qualcomm and Samsung then suggests we might even see this tech brought to mid-rangers next year. So, Samsung will basically become the Vivo and Oppo of 2019, releasing a bunch of more “affordable” devices with the better and faster UD fingerprint scanners.
Finally, we’d like to point out that Qualcomm’s competitor – MediaTek – is also working on a similar tech with Goodix. This latter company will most likely partner up with Chinese phone makers the likes of Lenovo, Huawei and Xiaomi, to bring a compelling alternative to the market.
