If the rumors are true, the Samsung Galaxy S10 family will break camera records next year as the Galaxy S10+ will arrive with five cameras in total – three in the back and two in the front – while the Galaxy S10 5G will add a new Time of Flight (ToF) Sensor in the rear.
The ToF camera can be used for 3D-sensing the environment before the phone’s lenses and input the data gathered in real-time augmented or virtual reality apps. It may also detect various gestures like on the first phone with such a camera, the Oppo R17 Pro. This technology can be used also to calculate distances.
Today, some Korean media claim that the mid-range A series will also add ToF cameras in 2019. Not only that, but sources in the supply chain indicate that Apple will also have a 3D sensor camera on their iPhones in 2019. LG will supply the ToF module to Apple, while Samsung will trust its SEMCO and Patron suppliers, according to the report.
