Samsung Electronics has today announced that it has begun to mass-produce the industry’s first 1 Terabyte eUFS 2.1 storage chip, which will be used in the next generation of mobile devices.
Just four years after introducing the first UFS storage solution for smartphones, the 128GB eUFS, Samsung has surpassed the Terabyte threshold.
Thanks to this chip, users of smartphones can enjoy a storage capacity comparable to that of a PC without having to use additional memory cards. As a reference, 1 TB of storage is equivalent to about 260 videos of 10 minutes in 4K UHD format.
The new 1 TB eUFS solution maintains the same encapsulation size (11.5 x 13.0 mm) and doubles the capacity of the previous 512 GB version by combining 16 stacked layers of 512 GB V-NAND flash memory and a new development controller of its own.

The new chip also has exceptional sequential read speed up to 1,000 MB / s, twice the sequential read speed of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD drive and about 10 times the speed of a typical microSD card.
In addition, the random reading speed has increased up to 38 percent compared to the 512 GB version, registering up to 58,000 IOPS. Random writing is 500 times faster than a high performance microSD card (100 IOPS), reaching up to 50,000 IOPS.
Although Samsung has not confirmed when the first smartphones will arrive with this chip, it is expected that some of the Samsung Galaxy S10 versions will debut this storage.
