Nearly two years after the presentation of the LPDDR4x RAM produced by Samsung, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association has announced to all intents and purposes the Low Power Double Date Rate 5 memories, or more simply LPDDR5. These new memories, which had been discussed several times over the last few months, promise greater speed and efficiency, bringing to smartphones and others devices a higher level of productivity.
Going more specific, LPDDR5 memories can work with a data rate up to 6400 MT/s – compared to the 3200 MT/s of LPDDR4 memory – thus being able to offer much better performance on different types of electronic equipment, including even the automotive sector. An important innovation is the transition to 16-bank programmable and multi-clock architecture and as previously announced by Samsung, their data transmission speed can reach 51 MB/s.
Gizchina News of the week
Among the main new features of LPDDR5, there are two new operations called Data-Copy and Write-X. The Data-Copy command gives the ability to copy data transmitted from a single I/O pin to another I/O pin, eliminating the need to transmit data to other pins. Instead, the Write-X command takes care of transcribing all 1 or all 0 on certain addresses, eliminating the need to send data from the SoC to the LPDDR5 device. The presence of these two new operations is mainly aimed at reducing the overall energy consumption of the system. Finally, we find improvements also in terms of reliability and security through the introduction of support to the Link Error Correcting Code (ECC) between the SoC interface and the DRAM.
At the moment, LPDDR5 RAM memories are already available for purchase from the official website of JEDEC Solid State Technology Association at a price of $355.00 . What do you think of these new memories? Please let us know in the comment box!
