Nokia 3.1 is HMD Global’s latest smartphone to get a taste of Android Pie

HMD Global did it again! The Finnish company behind Nokia’s unexpected revival is deploying Android Pie to another of its smartphones, this time for the Nokia 3.1. The company once again teaches to big firms, how to make good software support by offering quick and reliable updates to all the smartphones of its portfolio, and not only to the flagship ones.

Nokia’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, published the good news through its Twitter account. The Nokia 3.1 was released around the middle of July last year. Although it became available in more countries a few time later, the Indian release remained the most relevant for the company’s overall performance with the mid-range offering. The handset boasts a 5.2-inch HD+ 18:9 display and is powered by the MediaTek’s MT6750, 2GB of RAM, and nearly 3,000mAh of battery capacity. It’s particularly interesting to see HMD Global providing an important update for a device that has a MediaTek chipset, since constant software support for smartphones with it is nearly inexistent.

The handset was released for just $160, and despite the low-profit-margin, HMD decided to honor its recent legacy by providing a taste of Pie for the small device. Worth noting that the device was already updated to Android 8.1 Oreo back in September last year, now the company gives a step further by introducing the 9.0 version of Android for the cheap device.

The update is being deployed in a gradual form, so it may take several days to arrive for all eligible devices. Still, you can try your luck by checking Settings > About phone > System updates to see if the update is ready on your device.
