Yu Chengdong: Huawei will top the smartphone market next year


Yesterday, Huawei released its P30 series in China. In an interview after the press conference, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business, talked about Huawei’s plans for the mobile phone business over past two years and the development strategy of the entire consumer business in the future.

He said that Huawei’s smartphone business can top the world’s smartphone market share this year, but it is confident that it will be first next year. In addition, the company aims to get $150 billion in sales revenue in 2023. The company has invested over $5 billion in R&D and it is hopeful that its investment will take it to the top spot next year.

Yu Chengdong said that Huawei is surpassing Apple and Samsung in many developed countries to become the market leader. As far as the Chinese market is concerned, one out of every three mobile phones sold is now Huawei. This year, one of every two sold will be Huawei. He added

Huawei’s CEO believes that 5G technology will take the company to new heights. He said “This year is called the 5G first year, many mobile phone manufacturers are showing or launching their own 5G mobile phones. Huawei is far ahead of 5G.  and after the commercialization of 5G, the best 5G mobile phone must come from Huawei.

Yu Chengdong believes that the 5G network is still under construction this year and will be more perfect next year. Therefore, the large-scale sales of 5G mobile phones will have to wait until next year, this year is still based on 4G mobile phones.

Huawei is also one of the few companies with 5G chip design capabilities. Earlier this year, Huawei released the 5G multimode terminal chip, Baron 5000 baseband chip. Recent reports suggests that Apple may turn to Huawei for its 5G chip. Yu Chengdong responded to the rumors saying that Hauwei’s 5G chips will remain open to Apple. However, he also stressed that the US government is currently suppressing Huawei, so even if Apple wants to use Huawei’s 5G chip, it will encounter obstacles from the US government.
