Samsung will continue betting on perforated screens

When Samsung introduced the new Galaxy S10 in February, one of its main novelties was the placement of the front camera on the screen itself, making use of a hole drilled in it.

This week we have seen two Chinese manufacturers, Xiaomi and Oppo, present their front camera solution hidden under the screen.

This is the dream of many manufacturers (and users) as it allows you to get a phone that is all screen without having to resort to the use of notches or more fragile solutions such as the pop-up camera.

However, the well-known source of leaks Ice Universe has revealed that Samsung plans to continue using perforated screens on their smartphones for the next 1-2 years.

The reason is that the camera technology under the screen will take a while to mature. In fact, Oppo has already indicated when publishing its video that it was a very incipient technology and that the image quality was inferior to that of a conventional camera.

Now, this does not mean that we are not going to see advances in the perforated cameras. According to the source, this year Samsung will reduce the size of the hole to something more than 3 mm, while it will be reduced to 1-2 mm later.

It is worth to mention that recently, reports out of China suggests that Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, has recently started staff layoff at its last mobile phone factory in China. The layoffs are voluntary and the deadline for employees to register voluntarily is June 14. Although Samsung declined to comment on the details of planned smartphone production cuts, recent reports show that due to increased competition in China’s domestic market, the company has decided to cut the smartphone production at the Huizhou factory.
