Redmi teases a 64MP camera phone, camera samples included

Redmi 64MP

Xiaomi’s backed Redmi promised to make an all-important announcement today.  Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing has today delivered on that. It isn’t a real announcement though, but a sort of teaser. The GM today released the first hint that a Redmi phone with a 64MP camera could be launching soon. So Redmi could end up being the first OEM to release a smartphone with a 64MP camera sensor. Lu Weibing on his Weibo page has released the first camera sample of a 64-megapixel camera phone.

The samples reveal a very vivid picture of a cat and that of Xiaomi’s Technology park. And interestingly, details are well maintained even after zooming. Details about the Redmi phone touting a 64MP camera are completely no-existent, though we can see the camera app in the picture below.

The identity of the Redmi phone remains unknown. Although there are some guesses that the first Redmi phone to sport such a huge camera might be the Redmi Note 8, or even the Redmi K30 Pro. But we are not sure these devices will launch this year, given that the Note 7 and K20 series are just a few months old in the market.

64MP Redmi Phone launch coming soon?

And with Redmi already teasing the launch of a 64MP camera phone, we can rest assured that a Redmi phone with such camera at its rear could be a reality soon.

Other than Redmi/Xiaomi, other OEMs like Realme are also reportedly working on floating a phone with a 64MP camera. But what remains unknown is what time these devices will hit the market.

Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor

That said, the said Redmi phone when launched will come equipped with Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor launched back in the month of May.  The sensor uses the same 0.8μm-sized pixels as Samsung’s 48MP sensor, and rely on pixel-merging Tetracell technology to output a single 16Mp image in low-light environments and highly-detailed 64Mp shots in a more lighted environment using the remosaic algorithm.
