According to a report from an industry insider, Huawei is looking for ways to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek. The obvious path taken by the Chinese firm will lead to the intensification of Hi-Silicon SoCs manufacture and development. This way, the company will be able to cover all its segments with its chipsets.
The report indicates that during this second half of 2019, 60% of Huawei smartphones will boast a Kirin chipset. Interesting enough, it will represent a 20% increase over the same period last year. During H2 2018, 40% of the Huawei phones came with Kirin chipsets. We don’t need to go too far back in time, since, in H1 2019, this mark was stuck at 45%.
Gizchina News of the week
For the second half of 2019, Huawei is keen to employ Kirin SoCs over 150 million Huawei handsets. This is based on the company’s estimates of 270 million shipments for the whole year. Of course, this won’t affect the high-end segment, after all, Huawei flagships have been using Kirin chipsets for quite some time. However, Huawei’s low end and midrange segment are fed with MediaTek and Qualcomm’s chipsets.
The recently released Kirin 810 chipset made on the 7nm node is a good example of how things are changing. It’s a proprietary chipset that comes to drive upper midrange devices. It will surely play a big role in Huawei’s newest strategy.
