The research and development of major technologies usually start many years before they eventually hit the market. We are currently seeing the gradual spread of 5G technology which means that the industry is already looking beyond 5G. While 5G obviously need improvements, it already has a basic platform for development. According to recent reports, Huawei Labs in Ottawa, Canada has begun to develop 6G network technology. As of now, there is no standard for 6G standard. In addition, the research of 6G by major companies are probably in its theoretical stage.

Huawei Labs in Ottawa is an advanced R&D center. Huawei is the world’s leading 5G company with its core research and development spanning over a decade. The company is working with 13 universities as well as other research institutions to jointly develop new technologies. According to Huawei founder, Ren Zhengfei, the company’s investment in Canada is at least a few billion dollars.
Huawei’s tentative 6G plan shows that there will be no real 6G tech before 2030. This is almost another decade from now. Huawei investment in 5G technology dates as far back as 2009. At the time, the company released $600 million for research on 5G technologies and standards. The company invested another $1.4 billion in 2016 taking its total 5G investment to $2 billion. With this, Huawei has more 5G commitment than most American and European companies.
