Apart from smartphones, Xiaomi is largely known for its budget focussed fitness trackers with the recent one being Mi Band 4. With companies such as Huawei entering into the smartwatch space, it seems like the Chinese smartphone maker wants a piece of the cake too. As of now, Xiaomi has launched various smartwatches such as Amazfit GTR 42mm in collaboration with Huami. The company is now looking to create its very own smartwatch dubbed Mi Watch. We now believe that the company is currently working on Mi Watch, its first Mi smartwatch.
As per the recent report, Google Wear OS app having version 2.28 contains code that suggests Mi Watch is in works. The app contains “xiaomi_companion_name” with the value “Mi Wear” strings. This indicates the Mi Wear app through which the smartwatch will connect to a smartphone. Currently, Xiaomi uses Mi Fit app for all its fitness trackers and Mi Health lifestyle products. Wear OS manufacturers generally offers a companion app to the company. For instance, Huawei smartwatches have its own companion app called Huawei Wear. The same will go for the Xiaomi if it ends up launching its own smartwatch.
Gizchina News of the week
Since the string says “Mi Wear”, we’re expecting the brand to launch its smartwatch with the Mi Watch moniker. Looking at the previous naming schemes for TVs, fitness bands and phones, Xiaomi will most likely go with the Mi Watch moniker. The smartwatch will run on Google’s Wear OS platform considering the existence of Mi Wear in Wear OS APK. Apart from these, there is no more information on the Xiaomi Mi Watch. This is an early indication of the smartwatch so we are expecting more details to come forward in the coming months. The smartwatch will definitely face immense competition from the likes of Huawei, Samsung, and Apple.
